Couple charged in alleged arson case
A Dawson County couple has been arrested in connection with what authorities are calling a set fire to a home off War Hill Park Road. James Henry Raines is charged with first-degree arson. He and wife Gloria Ann Raines, both of whom are 31, were taken into custody Feb. 28 in Dawsonville, according to jail records.
Greer to be supervising ADA at Dawson office
Northeastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Lee Darragh announced Monday that longtime prosecutor Conley Greer has been assigned as the new supervising assistant district attorney for the Dawson County office. "The citizens of Dawson County will be well served with Mr. Greer in his capacity as Supervising ADA," Darragh said Monday afternoon in a release.
Several promoted at sheriff’s office
Dawson County Sheriff Billy Carlisle recently promoted three officers to new leadership positions in the agency's uniform patrol and criminal investigation divisions. The promotions of Maj. Tony Wooten, Capt. Ray Goodie and Lt. Dan Ramsey took effect last month. They are an extension of Carlisle's two-year plan to streamline departmental operations and better provide top-notch police services to the community.
Local man dies in prison
A defendant in a high profile Dawson County government theft case was found dead Saturday at the minimum security prison south of Atlanta where he was serving his sentence. Funeral services for Justin Curtis Disharoon, 25, were held Monday at Bethel Baptist Church in Dawsonville.
Advocate leads state board for second year
Local advocate Katie Strayhorn was recently re-elected to serve as chair of the state's Sex Offender Review Board for the second year. In her first year chairing the panel, Strayhorn focused on several initiatives. She also worked closely with newly-elected state Rep. Kevin Tanner to propose legislation that would allow the board to review parole notes in assessing sex offenders.
Ga. 400 manhunt suspect indicted
A 22-year-old Dawsonville man has been indicted on several charges after he reportedly disrupted traffic last summer on Ga. 400. Luke Evans will face two counts of reckless conduct and one count each of first-degree burglary and criminal trespass, according to an indictment handed down last week by the Forsyth County Grand Jury.
Alcohol suspected in head-on collision
Authorities say alcohol appears to have been a factor in a head-on collision Thursday night on Hwy. 53 that sent three people to area hospitals. A spokeswoman with Georgia State Patrol said 54-year-old Kenneth Smith of Dawsonville faces several traffic violations, including driving under the influence.
Cumming man indicted on child sex charges
A 27-year-old Cumming man has been indicted by a Dawson County Grand Jury on charges of child molestation, statutory rape and enticing a child for indecent purposes. Elvis Lamar Griffin was also indicted on charges of reckless conduct for allegedly having unprotected sexual intercourse with the juvenile teen in October while knowing he was infected with HIV, according to the Dec. 6 indictment.
Chase leads to 2 arrests
A 25-year-old Cumming man faces drug and traffic charges in Dawson and Forsyth counties following a late-night, high-speed chase that spanned nearly 30 miles. According to the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, Andrew Michael Waters has been charged with possession of methamphetamine, a felony.
Program to aid patients
Dawson County has received a state grant designed to help mental health patients involved in the criminal justice system live productive lives. County commissioners on Thursday approved a proposal by Superior Court Judge Kathlene Gosselin to accept the grant, which would establish a local mental health court.
Lumpkin County teen charged in burglary
A Dahlonega teen faces felony theft charges stemming from a June 2011 burglary. Jackson Edward Kearns, 19, turned himself in to authorities Oct. 22.
Realtor charged with falsifying contract
A local real estate agent is facing felony charges in connection with what investigators are calling a fraudulent sales transaction. Carol Michaelson, 49, of Dawsonville turned herself into authorities Oct. 10. She was released a short time later.
Couple faces drug charges
A Marble Hill couple who fled the country to avoid drug charges has been taken into Dawson County custody. Dawson County Sheriff's Lt. Ray Goodie said Gladys Lucia Ferrer, 46, and husband Nelson Vidal Ferrer-Hernandez, 52, were detained last week as they attempted to enter Panama.
Grand jury hands down indictments
More than two dozen people were indicted on criminal charges after a Dawson County Grand Jury met Sept. 10. Among those facing charges are a Dahlonega man found in possession of industrial grade dynamite that closed down an area in downtown Dawsonville earlier this year and a parolee who was released to care for her aging father but was then reportedly caught abusing him.
Man may also have posed as officer here
A Dahlonega man arrested last month for impersonating an officer in neighboring Lumpkin County faces the same charge in Dawson County. According to authorities, Donald Lee Hill portrayed himself as a border patrol agent with the Department of Homeland Security on several occasions between May 1 and July 1 to employees at a local pawn shop.

A Dawsonville woman has been charged in connection with the alleged embezzlement of more than $27,000 from a Gainesville business. According to authorities, Amanda Kaye Phillips, 31, reportedly stole 52 blank checks from Bulldawg Collision, where she had worked for nearly a decade.
Men face animal cruelty charges
A former county employee is among two men facing charges in an animal cruelty probe involving malnourished horses in northwestern Dawson. Tyler Jones of Dawsonville and Jim White of Dallas were cited last week with three counts each of animal cruelty by the Dawson County Marshal's Office.
