County disagrees with annexation

The Dawsonville City Council voted 4-0 on Monday to annex nearly 85 acres of property in the county.

The annexations include a 5-acre parcel to which Dawson County Attorney Joey Homans had previously filed an objection.

County settles lawsuit with club

A more than five-year feud over noise from gunfire has ended, with a controversial gun club staying put in southeastern Dawson County.

County commissioners voted 3-1 on Thursday to settle a lawsuit with Richard Becker, owner of Etowah Valley Sporting Clays.

Residents will get to vote on Sunday sales

Voters in Dawsonville can decide this November whether they want to allow stores to sell alcohol on Sundays.

In a 4-0 vote Monday night, the city council approved holding a referendum on package sales for retailers.

Courthouse on track for December opening

Officials are predicting an early December opening for the county's new courthouse.

Bob Ivey, manager of special projects for the Dawson County Board of Commissioners, said a rough winter followed by frequent rain storms in spring delayed construction by about 12 weeks.

Glee continues over court’s water ruling

You might have heard it last week - the collective sigh of relief and high-five slapping, as word quickly spread that Georgia had won a decisive victory in its long-standing battle over water withdrawal from Lake Lanier.

"I'm extremely pleased," said Kelly Randall, Gainesville's public utilities director. "I think the ruling goes beyond what I had hoped. I think it's great the court ... said (water supply) was an original purpose."

Ralston settles tax debt

A spokesman for Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston said the Blue Ridge Republican would have paid more than $1,300 in property taxes to Dawson County earlier if he had known about the debt.

Dawson County Tax Commissioner Linda Townley filed a lien for the amount, which includes penalties and interest, earlier this year on property owned by Ralston's wife.

City adopts budget

The Dawsonville City Council adopted the budget for fiscal year 2011-12 during a meeting Monday night.

At $1.2 million, the budget hasn't changed much from last year's $1.15 million plan for municipal services and expenses.
