Dawson sheriff withdraws from certification program

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office has temporarily withdrawn from a state certification program for law enforcement agencies and plans to seek certification again next spring.

Sheriff Billy Carlisle sent a letter to the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police on July 20 requesting to voluntarily withdraw from the program.

Maps up for change

State lawmakers representing Dawson County said earlier this week they were pleased with the proposed House and Senate districts.

Dawson County Government and Community Affairs is currently accepting applicants for the Fall 2011 academy, which begins Aug. 30.

Annexation may lead to arbitration

The Dawsonville City Council and the Dawson County commission may be heading for arbitration over a disputed piece of property on Hwy. 136.

After the final required public hearing on the matter Monday night, the city council voted 4-0 to annex the 5-acre parcel.

Tax appeals rise slightly from ’10

The number of property tax appeals submitted to the Dawson County Board of Assessors is up slightly from 2010.

Chief appraiser Michael Roberts said his office received roughly 750 appeals from more than 15,000 assessments mailed out to property owners in June. The office received nearly 600 in 2010.

Dates set for park hearings

Two hearings are scheduled in September to let the public weigh in on a proposed reservoir and the possibility of a park in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

Earlier this month, Dawson County Commissioner Gary Pichon encouraged his fellow board members to consider his idea for a grand park on a portion of the 10,000 acre tract.
