Former official mourned

A lifelong Dawsonville resident and former city council member died Thursday at her home.

Friends say Gennie Melinda "Linda" Grant, 62, will be remembered for her devotion to her son and commitment to her hometown.

Annexation may lead to arbitration

The Dawsonville City Council and the Dawson County commission may be heading for arbitration over a disputed piece of property on Hwy. 136.

After the final required public hearing on the matter Monday night, the city council voted 4-0 to annex the 5-acre parcel.

Tax appeals rise slightly from ’10

The number of property tax appeals submitted to the Dawson County Board of Assessors is up slightly from 2010.

Chief appraiser Michael Roberts said his office received roughly 750 appeals from more than 15,000 assessments mailed out to property owners in June. The office received nearly 600 in 2010.

Dates set for park hearings

Two hearings are scheduled in September to let the public weigh in on a proposed reservoir and the possibility of a park in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

Earlier this month, Dawson County Commissioner Gary Pichon encouraged his fellow board members to consider his idea for a grand park on a portion of the 10,000 acre tract.

County disagrees with annexation

The Dawsonville City Council voted 4-0 on Monday to annex nearly 85 acres of property in the county.

The annexations include a 5-acre parcel to which Dawson County Attorney Joey Homans had previously filed an objection.

A more than five-year feud over noise from gunfire has ended, with a controversial gun club staying put in southeastern Dawson County.

County commissioners voted 3-1 on Thursday to settle a lawsuit with Richard Becker, owner of Etowah Valley Sporting Clays.
