Commission chair says county in ‘good shape’

Grogan resigns as councilman
Dawsonville's acting mayor has resigned from the city council. "Really and truly it's just one of those things I've been thinking about," James Grogan said during a special called city council meeting Thursday. "I prayed about it and felt that I couldn't serve both positions well.
Board rejects request for additional funds
Commissioners last week said the $84,000 the county contributed to a watershed assessment on Lake Allatoona and the Upper Etowah River is enough. The board received a request last month to contribute between $5,000 and $8,000 to cover additional costs incurred during the assessment.
State lawmakers give updates on session
State Sen. Steve Gooch and State Rep. Amos Amerson highlighted key issues and gave brief updates on the 2012 Legislative Session during the Dawson County Republican Party's April meeting. The state's budget was a hot topic for both April 24 with Gooch pushing for a zero-based budget that he says can save the state billions of dollars.
Dawsonville's Grogan resigns as councilman
Councilman James Grogan, who is currently serving as acting mayor for the City of Dawsonville, announced Thursday that he would be resigning as a council member. "Really and truly it's just one of those things I've been thinking about," Grogan said. "I prayed about it and felt that I couldn't serve both positions well. I felt it was best that I resigned from the one and gave my full attention to the other."
Newcomer announces bid for tax commissioner
A political newcomer with accounting and administration experience plans to run for Dawson County tax commissioner. Karin McKee, 58, is the first candidate to announce her intentions to seek the position in the July 31 primary election. Qualifying is set for May 23-25.
Hughes Nix announces re-election campaign
Longtime Dawson County District 4 Commissioner Julie Hughes Nix recently announced her plans to seek a fourth term this year. A lifelong county resident, Hughes Nix became the first woman elected to the commission in 1996. After taking four years off following her first term, she was re-elected in 2004 and '08.
Board gives farm go ahead
Members of the Dawsonville Planning Commission on Monday said they will recommend approval of a zoning map amendment that would allow a local farm to have chickens and pigs on the property. Currently zoned restricted single family residential, property owner Jack Forester requested the farm be rezoned to restricted agriculture, which allows swine and fowl.
Commission chair seeking third term
Mike Berg has announced that he will seek a third term as chairman of the Dawson County commission in the July 31 primary. A Republican, Berg was first elected to the five-member board in 2004, when he outlined a series of goals based on a principle of balance.
Change coming to precinct boundary
Nearly 700 voters in western Dawson County will vote in downtown Dawsonville for future elections. The shift came about Monday as the local elections board unanimously agreed to align local precincts with the district boundaries for the state House of Representatives.
County dedicates time capsule
Future generations will get a glimpse of life in Dawson County circa 2012 when they open a time capsule buried last week at the county's new government center. "How appropriate it is that we are burying a time capsule here at the government (center) and courthouse, because really, a time capsule is something that ties the past with the future," said Northeastern Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Jason Deal.
Interim manager named
The Dawson County commission has appointed Cindy Campbell interim county manager. Campbell, the county's chief financial officer, will oversee operations in the absence of County Manager Kevin Tanner beginning May 28, when he takes a leave of absence to run for state office.
City councilman plans mayoral bid
A Dawsonville city councilman has announced his plan to run for mayor this summer. "I've always enjoyed working with the citizens of our city to serve our community, which is why I'm excited about the opportunity to take an even bigger role," Calvin Byrd said.
Acting mayor will seek post
Dawsonville's acting mayor has announced his intention to seek the position in the July 31 special election. "I am really looking forward to running for the office of mayor because I believe with my experience and my knowledge of government that I would do a good job," James Grogan said.
