Still time to prune trees, shrubs

As we get closer to spring, the best times for pruning many deciduous trees and shrubs is slipping away. However, there is still plenty of time to do any necessary pruning. Some trees bleed heavily when pruning is done closer to the growth time. A few of these are maple and birch.

Liming of soil aids pH levels

Proper pH of the soil is important to plants. If the pH is low, lime may be added any time of the year. However, since lime is slow to react, applying lime as soon as possible is important. Soil pH strongly influences plant growth, the availability of nutrients and the activity of soil microbes.

Avoid injury to trees and shrubs

Gardeners are disappointed when a portion or all of a plant dies. Injury to the trunk, crown (area at the soil line) or roots generally is the primary cause of death. Death of plants can result from two or more factors interacting to weaken or injure a plant.
