Tips for soil sampling

If you were one of the people who called the extension office last week, then you probably know that I was away.

I was in Athens attending a week long training session for county agents.

Really, I’m not judgmental

I don't consider myself to be judgmental. I don't. In fact, I think I am one of the least judgmental people I know.

"You are being judgmental," I will reprimand Mama when she gets on her high horse about something.

Kudzu bugs are back

I have received many calls to the extension office in the past few weeks about small brown bugs swarming on houses and irritating gardeners.

These little pests are called kudzu bugs, and they have been annoying north Georgia outdoor lovers since 2009.

Mama said there’d be days like this …

Jealousy is one of the pettiest emotions. It destroys relationships, creates strife and fosters insecurity. It's easy to see why jealousy has been called a green-eyed monster. My jealousy monster just happens to be a beautiful silky black Border collie.

I never would have imagined the little ball of fur I rescued four years ago to be capable of such jealousy, but she is.

My own future ‘warning’

The first time I saw those "Red Hat" ladies, I thought they were just fashionably challenged. Granted, I loved the festive, colorful red hats but with purple? That was a color combo I had only seen on the ex's mother and I just figured it was because she didn't know any better fashion-wise, bless her heart.

I vaguely remembered reading the poem that had inspired the red hat wearing, but at the time, I was young, maybe still in my teens.

Love of Cole’s life is not so much like his mama

I was warned before my son started Pre-K that first grade may bring about the great love of Cole's life.

"Oh, watch out," a client told me. "When I started first grade, I met this girl and went home and told my Mama I had found the girl I was going to marry."

Every year I tell myself ‘one won’t hurt’

Every year about this time, I make the same solemn vow to myself: No more Thin Mints.

Not just because I try to watch my weight, but mainly because I have celiac and am not supposed to eat anything with gluten.

Eight cities in 12 days

I made my way past Immigration, which always gives one some sense of relief. Getting into a country is one thing. Getting back out is something completely different.

I found my way to the bar to wait.

My greatest fears include dolls, canned biscuits

My sister is fearless.

She will hop on a plane to go anywhere, she drives hours just to take on the scariest haunted houses in the state and her most recent hobby involves guns.

Landscape questions for late winter season

Over the past 30 years as an extension agent, I have received tens of thousands of questions related to lawn and garden care.

Just when I think I have heard every question possible, there is a new one.

I’m sure there’s an app for that

I am one of those rare people who actually uses their cell phone to talk.

I will text and take photos of Cole to send Mama, but I would say about 90 percent of the time, I just talk.

What it means to live in a small town

There's a difference between city folk and small town folk.

Even though I love some of the conveniences that a bigger city offers, I am a country girl at heart that loves living in a small town.

Mama said there’d be days like this

I've never been a big fan of Valentine's Day.

Sometimes, I wish I could be - to be able to get caught up in the romance, the pink and red heart-shaped everything, the cards covered with sugary rhymes professing love.

Landscape work for the month of February

Some people may think February is the slowest month of the year to work with your landscape, but really it's not.

February is a good month for doing dormant pruning of deciduous trees and shrubs (with the exception of spring-flowering plants that are pruned after they bloom).
