Ties with new center contested

A Wisconsin-based anti-religion group has challenged the constitutionality of the Dawson County school system accepting faith-based course credits from a new local Christian learning center. In a letter dated Jan. 9, the Freedom from Religion Foundation demands that the school board sever its ties with Dawson County Christian Learning Center.

School band plays at Georgia Dome

The Dawson County High School band played in front of more than 68,000 people during the Chick-fil-A Bowl on New Year's Eve at the Georgia Dome. The band was selected to perform during the Dec. 31 college football bowl game based on past performances in marching band competitions and support from the high school.

Art on display

Black's Mill Elementary kicked off its annual student art show on Dec. 4 at the Bowen Art Center. The event marked the eleventh year for the show, but was the first time all of the art has appeared in one location.

Black’s Mill gets into the holiday spirit

Last week, Black's Mill Elementary School hosted a variety of holiday events for the students. Fourth graders were treated to a taste of colonial life and schooling recently during Colonial Day while kindergarteners stayed warm in their pajamas, watching and reading "The Polar Express."

Local middle-schooler looks out for animals

One Riverview Middle School student has big plans for small animals this year in Dawson County. Eleven-year-old Shannon Porter is making it her goal to see that animals at the Dawson County Humane Society have a Merry Christmas with her new charity "Christmas for Critters."

Chamber receives grant

The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce has been awarded a grant by the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education to help encourage more students in Dawson County to apply for and attend post-secondary institutions. The chamber is one of only five chambers in the state of Georgia that has been awarded the grant.

Students top state average on test scores

Dawson County High School exceeded the state average on the 2012 Georgia High School Writing Test, according to results released last week. "We had an increase in our overall pass rate - 'meets and exceeds' - with 94 percent," said Jute Wilson, principal.

Ornament sales support nonprofits

Ornament sales are under way at local elementary schools. The funds raised by these sales will benefit K.A.R.E. for Kids. The ornaments are made by art teachers and their students. Robinson Elementary kicked off its inaugural run this year with art teacher John Lundy at the helm.

R.E.A.D. donates to middle schoolers

Riverview Middle School students will soon have a new component to enhance their reading skills. On Monday, Joe Hirsch and Sandy Lipkowitz with the Reading Education Association of Dawson County arrived at the school with news Language Arts teacher Cassie Tallant has been waiting to pass on to her students that struggle with reading.

Students reach for GOAL

Two Lanier Technical College students from Dawsonville have been nominated for a state awards program. Instructors at the technical college nominated a total of 18 students from its campuses for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership, or GOAL, competition.

Band receives donation

The Dawson County Pride Marching Band received a gift recently when Walmart presented the group with a $2,500 check. With the donation, the band has collected the $17,000 needed to travel to Atlanta and perform during the nationally televised halftime show of the Chick-fil-A Bowl during the New Year's weekend.

Sophomores receive leadership awards

Dawson County High School sophomores Matthew Holton and Cullen McDonald were named the 2012 Hugh O'Brian Leadership Award recipients last week. Presented annually by the Dawson County Woman's Club, the award recognizes outstanding students for their leadership and service to community.

Riverview Middle School's assistant principal was recently named best in the state by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals. As the statewide winner, Kristi Gerrells is in the running for 2013 national assistant principal honors.

Young farmer a ‘Star’

A young entrepreneur from Dawson County has achieved the Future Farmers of America's highest honor. Bradley Weaver, 21, was awarded the American Star Award in Agribusiness on Oct. 27 during the organization's 85th annual national convention in Indianapolis.

Pheasant shoot raises funds for Lanier Tech

The Lanier Technical College Foundation announced it raised more than $22,000 following its second annual Pheasant Shoot earlier this month. All proceeds from the Oct. 13 pheasant shoot go to benefit the Lanier Technical College Foundation's General Scholarship Fund.
