Leaders to speak at luncheon
Several local leaders will be the guest speakers at tomorrow's Dawson County Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Speakers include Mike Berg, chairman of the Dawson County Board of Commissioners; James Grogan, acting mayor for the City of Dawsonville; Elaine Wilson, chairwoman of the Dawson County School Board; Jim King, chairman of the Etowah Water and Sewer Authority; and Peter Hill, chairman of the Development Authority of Dawson County.
YMCA looking to expand in Dawson
The Georgia Mountains YMCA is considering Dawson County for future expansion. Rich Gallagher, YMCA president and chief executive officer, confirmed Tuesday preliminary plans are in the works for a standalone YMCA facility in Dawsonville.
School superintendent speaks to homebuilders
A major consideration for many parents looking for a place to plant their homestead is the quality of the local school system. Recognizing this, the Dawson/Lumpkin Homebuilders Association invited Keith Porter, superintendent of Dawson County schools, to speak at its monthly meeting.
Tasting bill passes Senate
A bill that would allow tasting at distilleries across the state has made its way through the Georgia General Assembly and awaits the governor's signature. Proponents of the bill, including master distiller Dwight Bearden, who will oversee operations at Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery, say the measure will drive economic development.
‘That’s a wrap’
Tuesday was a wrap for movie scenes filmed at a motel near downtown Dawsonville. The cast and crew have moved on to their next location, leaving only the memory that Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood spent a week here and gave the community a glimpse of Hollywood.
Rate hits lowest since ’08
Dawson County ended 2011 with a 7.6 percent unemployment rate, its lowest since December 2008. January's rate is up slightly to 8 percent, but still significantly below the level of the last few years.
Chamber awards members
Passengers set sail Friday night aboard the USS Dawson for an Italian adventure on the high seas. The virtual cruise and gala was a night to celebrate the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce's accomplishments of 2011 and honor many in the community for their contributions.
Authority offering residential incentive
On the heels of a commercial development incentive, the Etowah Water and Sewer Authority wants to also encourage residential growth. The authority's board of directors recently voted to wave tap and meter fees for residential development during the 2012 calendar year.
Chamber gala is Friday
The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce will host its annual banquet Friday. The evening, which is titled "USS Dawson Cruise to Italy," will begin at 6 p.m. at the Lakeview Center on Dawson Forest Road, with a cocktail hour; followed by a seated dinner at 7 p.m. "with the captain."
Agent retiring after 30 years
It was standing room only Friday as friends and family gathered to celebrate a career that has spanned three decades. Dawson County's longtime extension agent Clark Beusse announced earlier this year he would retire. Today is his last day on the job.
Film to feature local motel
Scenes for a major motion picture starring Clint Eastwood are scheduled to be shot in Dawsonville next month. Pravin Patel, owner of Amicalola Lodge, confirmed Friday that the motel on Hwy. 53 west of downtown will be the backdrop for several scenes in "Trouble with the Curve."
Bank branch closing downtown
Community and Southern Bank plans to close its downtown Dawsonville branch at the end of April. Bank officials announced last week the branch on Main Street will be combined with one at 4300 Dawson Forest Road, by Ga. 400.
Norton says region’s economy is stabilizing
Despite what the Mayan calendar and a Hollywood blockbuster projected, 2012 is not the end of the world but the "dawn" of a new one. At least that was the economic forecast given by Norton Agency President Frank Norton at the Georgia Mountains Center on Jan. 19.
Authority offering incentive
As a business incentive, the Etowah Water and Sewer Authority is prepared to offer new commercial developments a year's worth of free water and sewer service. "We are trying to encourage development inside the county," said Brooke Anderson, general manager of the authority. "We are doing something that to my knowledge has never been offered before."
Rezoning clears way for discount retailer on Hwy. 9
The county commission approved a rezoning last week that will bring a discount retail store to southwestern Dawson. As soon as permits are in place, construction is set to begin on a Dollar General off Hwy. 9 in the Silver City area, near the Forsyth County line.

A hardware failure at Windstream's central office in Dahlonega is reportedly to blame for last week's widespread Internet outage in Dawson County.

Dawson County will soon be seeing more of that familiar yellow sign popping up. The Norton Agency, a real estate service that also specializes in mortgage, insurance, commercial brokerage, relocation, management, rentals, home repair, home warranty and closing services officially opened a new branch in Dawson County last week.

Medical plaza opens in Dawson
Health care offerings continue to improve in Dawson County with the opening of Northeast Georgia Health System's Medical Plaza 400. "We are thrilled to be extending our services in this market and excited about the opening of our new Medical Plaza 400 and all of the services," said Carol Burrell, president and CEO of Northeast Georgia Health System.
Interest in Ga. 400 continues to grow
Representatives with Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen applied for a front setback variance on a piece of property along Ga. 400 in Dawson County on Feb. 8. According to Dawson County Planning Director David McKee, the restaurant would sit on less than 1-acre just south of Kauffman Tire near Beartooth Parkway's intersection with the highway.
Business moving here
A nationwide manufacturer of custom hotel and hospitality millwork announced last week it will relocate to Dawson County. "We're excited to be coming home to Dawson County," said Eric Sutton, president of Five Star Architectural, an industry leader in commercial and residential cabinetry.
Alcohol license under scrutiny
The owner of a local restaurant and bar has until April 22 to submit corrected calculations documenting her sales after initial reports showed she may have sold more alcohol than food in 2012. Dawson County's alcohol ordinance requires eateries to draw 50 percent of their gross sales from food.
