Deals worth the wait

The holiday shopping season is officially here. And judging by the lines at local retailers, shoppers were happy with the deals they were finding on Black Friday.

Sales events started at 8 p.m. Thursday at Walmart and continued throughout the evening and into the weekend.

Urgent care center set to open Monday

The community is invited to a reception tomorrow in celebration of Northside Hospital's opening of an urgent care center in Dawson County.

Holiday shopping season kicks-off Thursday night

The official Christmas shopping season is still a couple days away, but retailers are bracing for one of the busiest Black Friday shopping events in years.

According to a report by the National Retail Federation, an estimated 147 million people will shop either at stores or online during the Black Friday weekend, which draws its name from an accounting term that indicates retailers have made a profit, or are "in the black."

Distillery gets green flag

The backwoods moonshining business birthed one of the nation's most popular sports in NASCAR, so it fits that the state's newest legal moonshine distillery is under the same roof as the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

In fact, the distillery - Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery on Hwy. 53 in Dawsonville - can't make the liquor fast enough to take the checkered flag ahead of its demand.

Consumer expo to highlight area businesses

Private firm to manage lodge

Management of the lodge, cottages and convention center at Amicalola Falls State Park in northern Dawson County will shift to a private hospitality firm on Dec. 1.

Dance team to appear on reality TV show

Reality television shows aren't exactly known for clearing up misconceptions, but one local dance team hopes a new show will tell the truth about the sport.

Synergy, a two-time national championship clogging team based in Cumming, will be featured in a one-hour reality TV show at 11 tonight on TLC.

Pain at pumps

This summer communities across the nation have seen the highest gas prices in seven years, increasing the stress on family budgets and small businesses.

Internet provider faces settlement, layoffs

The Governor's Office of Consumer Protection announced Monday that the agency has entered into a $600,000 settlement with Internet service provider Windstream Communications over allegations of false advertising.

The office claims that Windstream advertised speeds it could not provide, mislead customers as to the nature of their infrastructure, misrepresented minimum connection speeds and failed to completely clarify subscription-based promotions.
