Chamber unveils new logo
Officials with the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce hope a new logo unveiled last week will change the perception of the business organization. "The chamber really turned a corner last year, not just in that we hired a new director, but also that we have a new staff that's come on," said Peter Hill, board chairman. "With the transition and renovation, it's a perfect opportunity to rebrand and put a new face with the organization."
Expert sees retail impact
An area real estate and economic expert views Dawson County as a beacon for shoppers and encouraged the community to pay close attention to the "tremendous potential" of Ga. 400. "You're attracting retail here, which is attracting housing here, which will attract business here, which will improve here," Frank Norton Jr. said. "We are now mecca - not to worship, they are coming to spend money."
Networking event a success
Dawson County Chamber of Commerce officials are calling a new women's networking event an "ultimate success." "We're so glad we had such a great turn out for our inaugural event. This is something we're going to try to do quarterly," said Christie Haynes, chamber president.
Medical Plaza to open soon
Dawson County will soon have a new location for help with medical needs. Medical Plaza 400, a part of the Northeast Georgia Health System, is set to open in April at what was formerly the Moto 400 building, located north of the intersection of Hwy. 53 and Ga. 400.
Chamber offers networking event
The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its inaugural Women of the Chamber networking event. Set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the chamber office, just north of Hwy. 53 on Ga. 400, Women of the Chamber is a casual get-together featuring wine, cheese and a relaxed networking opportunity to meet other women in the local business community.
Local attorney tapped for Lanier Islands board
A local attorney is the newest member of the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority. Clint Bearden, 27, was one of several appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal in January to key positions in the state.
Interest along Ga. 400 spikes
Interest along the busy Ga. 400 corridor continues to spike after several years of sluggishness, officials say. David McKee, Dawson County's planning director, said his office has seen building permits and business license applications surge by about 40 percent from a year ago.
Northside Hospital now offers MRI in Dawsonville

Doughnut franchise opening this summer
A nationally known doughnut chain has submitted plans to build a location off Ga. 400. The Development Authority of Dawson County last week announced Dunkin' Donuts has submitted plans for the construction of a standalone building, north of the outlet mall.
Gala honors members
In a year when change topped the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce's agenda, the move to a new facility for the group's 22nd annual award's ceremony and gala brought a fun, festive and memorable experience Friday night. Held at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, the event marks the chamber's accomplishments of 2012 and honors many in the community for their contributions. It's also one of the organization's largest fundraisers.

Fresh n' Frugal-Cost Plus Foods, is a new concept supermarket open in Dahlonega. The business operates in the location formerly occupied by J&J Foods in the Greenbriar Shopping Center.
Chamber gala is Friday at hall of fame
Dust off those dancing shoes and get ready for an evening of food and fun as the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce holds its annual gala and awards ceremony Friday night. With a "Postcards from Dawson County" theme, the event will be held for the first time at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in downtown Dawsonville.

The 22nd annual Dawson County Chamber of Commerce banquet is just around the corner. The gala will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. This year's theme will be "Postcards from Dawson."
Distillery gets green light on tastings
Distillers on Friday got the final approval needed to begin offering samples of the first legal moonshine produced in Dawsonville. "I'm so excited," said owner Cheryl Wood. "We're all really excited."
Deals worth the wait
The holiday shopping season is officially here. And judging by the lines at local retailers, shoppers were happy with the deals they were finding on Black Friday. Sales events started at 8 p.m. Thursday at Walmart and continued throughout the evening and into the weekend.

Medical plaza opens in Dawson
Health care offerings continue to improve in Dawson County with the opening of Northeast Georgia Health System's Medical Plaza 400. "We are thrilled to be extending our services in this market and excited about the opening of our new Medical Plaza 400 and all of the services," said Carol Burrell, president and CEO of Northeast Georgia Health System.
Interest in Ga. 400 continues to grow
Representatives with Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen applied for a front setback variance on a piece of property along Ga. 400 in Dawson County on Feb. 8. According to Dawson County Planning Director David McKee, the restaurant would sit on less than 1-acre just south of Kauffman Tire near Beartooth Parkway's intersection with the highway.
Business moving here
A nationwide manufacturer of custom hotel and hospitality millwork announced last week it will relocate to Dawson County. "We're excited to be coming home to Dawson County," said Eric Sutton, president of Five Star Architectural, an industry leader in commercial and residential cabinetry.
Alcohol license under scrutiny
The owner of a local restaurant and bar has until April 22 to submit corrected calculations documenting her sales after initial reports showed she may have sold more alcohol than food in 2012. Dawson County's alcohol ordinance requires eateries to draw 50 percent of their gross sales from food.
Leadership program seeking applicants
The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its upcoming Leadership Dawson program. Established in 1992 as a joint program between the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce and the local University of Georgia Extension office, more than 150 local residents have graduated from Leadership Dawson.
