Family tradition

Teen-directed play opening Friday
The Dawson County Arts Council is presenting the musical production "Once on This Island Jr." this Friday at Riverview Middle School's auditorium. Sitting in a swing on the front stoop of his family's tent at Lumpkin Campground, Michael Hughes leans back and closes his eyes. "This is an enchanted place for me, a place of reflection where time stands still," he said. "I do a lot of traveling, but no matter where I am in the world, when it's time for campmeeting, this is where I am."
Campmeeting a 181 year tradition
An annual tradition will light up Lumpkin Campground on Sunday as families and friends gather to whitewash tree trunks in preparation for a weeklong spiritual revival known as campmeeting. "We painted the trees so we wouldn't run into them before we got electricity," said Thelma Byrd, who has attended campmeeting each summer for more than eight decades.
Market opens for season
With a cowboy hat to block the summer sun and a truckload of fresh vegetables he's not old enough to drive into town, Jacob McPherson looks like a veteran as he approaches a customer at the local farmer's market. "That's a Grenadier cabbage," said the 12-year-old, who credits his grandfather for instilling his love for gardening. "I grew it, and I picked it all last night."
