Spring sports around the corner

With all the winter weather Dawson County has been experiencing, it is hard to believe that several spring sports can begin conditioning or practice over the next couple of weeks.

Tigers zone out Rebels

The 3-2 match-up zone proved to be very effective as the Tigers escaped Fannin County on Saturday afternoon by a 34-28 score. Dawson came away with a very important Region 8-AA win over the Rebels in a hostile environment in Blue Ridge.

The Dawson County High School varsity girls basketball team traveled to Blue Ridge last Saturday afternoon for a Region 8-AA game with No. 6-ranked and undefeated Fannin County.

Head Coach Steve Sweat's varsity Lady Tiger basketball team fell to an undefeated Rabun County team, 79-49, in Tiger Friday night.

Tigers drop first game in region

It was Jekyll and Hyde performances for Head Coach Thad Burgess' varsity Tiger basketball team last week. Dawson traveled to Rabun County for its first Region 8-AA game on Friday. The Tigers led for most of the ballgame just to see their 12-point lead evaporate in the fourth quarter. The Tigers ended up losing to the Wildcats, 51-46.

JV Tigers remain undefeated

The Dawson County High School junior varsity boys' basketball team remained undefeated following two big wins this week. The Tigers defeated Woody Gap on Tuesday, 70-22, and Riverside Military Academy on Saturday, 43-29.

Girls start region play this week

The Dawson County Lady Tigers basketball team finished the first half of its season with an impressive 8-4 overall record. The Lady Tigers played in the Pickens Holiday Classic last week and finished with a 2-1 record.

Dawson County High School seniors Zach Johnson and Ethan Brown were selected to the Georgia Sports Writers Association 2010 AA All-State football team, released on Dec. 26.

Tigers win first home match of season

The Dawson County Tiger wrestling team rolled over visiting Clarkston High School on Dec. 21 to win the team's first home match of the season. The Tigers lost only one weight classification to come away with a huge 74-4 win.

Tiger grapplers finish in top 5

Coach Arron Haynes' Dawson County High School wrestling team competed at the State Traditional tournament in Macon Feb. 12-14. The Tigers took six wrestlers to the meet led by Gavin Brown (195 pounds), Harrison Adams (138 pounds), Jeremy Whalen (145 pounds), Brett Whalen (182 pounds), Ty Williams (heavyweight), and Justin Evans (113 pounds). All six wrestlers finished in the top ten.

Two-time state champion, Gavin Brown, finished in fourth place at state. Brown moved up a weight class this season and completed the season with a 44-8 record.

Girls start with double win

The Dawson County girls' soccer team opened the season with wins over Winder-Barrow, 7-0, on Feb. 10 and North Forsyth, 2-0, Feb. 13.

Coach Jed Lacey's team is currently ranked No, 7 in the latest Class AAA rankings.

The Tigers opened the season with wins over Winder-Barrow, 4-0, on Tuesday, and a 6-2 victory over North Forsyth Feb. 13

Baseball begins with scrimmage

Despite the cold weather, baseball season for Coach Thad Burgess' Dawson County Tiger team began with a scrimmage game against Elbert County on Saturday.

On a chilly and windy Valentine's Day, the Tigers played seven innings in front of a decent crowd of Blue Devil and Tiger fans.
