Girls lose close one against East Hall

So close. The Lady Tigers missed an opportunity to qualify for the state basketball tournament following a game against East Hall last week on the Lady Vikings' home court.

A missed shot with less than 5 seconds remaining ended the season for Dawson County.

Ladies play well against No. 6 Buford

The Dawson County High School varsity girls' soccer team showed that it can be competitive against state contenders with a close loss to No. 6 ranked Buford, 2-1, last week in Buford.

"I think we showed we can play with the better teams in the state tonight," said head coach Jed Lacey.

Tigers outkick Gilmer

The Dawson County High School varsity Tigers soccer team opened the regular season with a win over Gilmer County, 2-0, before losing to state-ranked Buford, 7-3, on Thursday. Buford is currently ranked No. 7 in AA.

The game with Gilmer County was very physical.

Ladies hope streak continues into tourney

It looks as though the varsity Lady Tigers basketball team could be getting hot at just the right time.

The team pulled off two huge wins last week. The Lady Tigers defeated a talented Union County team, 59-48, behind the 17 points and 3 assists from junior point guard Carly Gilreath.

Postseason begins

The Tigers head in to the postseason Region 8-AA tournament this week. The outcome of this week's action will determine if the Tigers make another trip to the state tournament.

Coach Thad Burgess' team finished the regular season with two big Region 8A-AA wins last week.

JV girls finish the season

The junior varsity girls basketball team finished its season with a 50-24 loss to Banks County on Friday.

Dawson ended its season with a 2-12 record.

Lady Tigers dominate in scrimmage

The Dawson County girls soccer team dominated East Jackson in a scrimmage game at Tigers Stadium last week.

The Lady Tigers used a combination of speed and quickness to overcome the Lady Eagles, 5-0, on Feb. 9.

Team led by youths

Freshmen scored four of the five goals for the Tigers against East Jackson in a scrimmage soccer game at home last week.

The Tigers youngsters showed the crowd what could be a "special" season for this year's Dawson County varsity soccer team.

Runner awarded track scholarship

Dawson County senior Madalyn Walters became the first student in Dawson County High School history to sign a Division I cross country and track scholarship when she signed with the University of Georgia last week.

The high school held a signing ceremony in the media center at 9:15 a.m. Feb. 2.

Wrestlers off to state sectionals

Dawson County placed four wrestlers in the state sectionals after last weekend's action in Elbert County.

Heading to the sectionals, which will be held at Dublin High School, are Preston Adams (160 pounds) and Evan Kells (182 pounds) who both placed second.

Defense tires ladies team

It was a tough week for the Dawson County Lady Tigers varsity basketball team. The Lady Tigers lost to two quality teams.

The team lost 45-38 against Fannin County in Blue Ridge before falling 75-53 to Class AA No. 10 ranked Rabun County on Friday night in Tiger.

Tigers split games

Coach Thad Burgess' Dawson County varsity boys basketball team had two long road trips last week.

The Tigers went to Blue Ridge on Jan. 31 and came away with a 38-23 win over the Rebels.

The Tigers captured first place during the Northwest Georgia Duals on Jan. 21 at Chattooga High School.

It was a long, rough week for the Dawson County Lady Tigers basketball team.

Coach Steve Sweat's team dropped Region 8A-AA games to Banks County, 69-57, and No. 5-ranked East Hall, 64-46.

Tigers claw way to victory

Dawson County fought back from a 9-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Banks County, 64-58, last week.

"This was a really important win and biggest win of the year," said head coach Thad Burgess. "Our kids were down 9 points in the last quarter and we were able to keep battling and make the plays at the end. We showed great effort and dedication against Banks."
