Ladies fall to East Hall

The Lady Tigers basketball team split a couple of games last week. Coach Steve Sweat's team dropped a 60-43 decision to No. 10 ranked in AA, East Hall, but picked up a huge 62-30 win over visiting Fannin County.

The Lady Tigers had a tough task against East Hall. The Lady Vikings have two players that have already signed to play college basketball next season.

Tigers rout Rebels

Coach Thad Burgess' varsity boys basketball team notched its first Region 8A-AA win of the season Friday against Fannin County. The Tigers outscored the visiting Rebels 55-17 in front of a huge crowd in Dawsonville.

The Tigers placed three players in double figures, led by Jackson Putnam with a game-high 11 points. Jonathan Sanderson and Tyler Dominy scored 10 points apiece in the 38-point win.

Sweat records 400th win

Dawson County High School coach Steve Sweat picked up his 400th career win on Saturday with a 47-31 defeat of Lumpkin County in Dahlonega.

It was another milestone in an illustrious career that has spanned more than 28 years coaching both boys and girls basketball in Georgia.

Tigers lose close one

Two of the best teams, with arguably two of the best players in Region 8-AA, squared off Friday night in Dawsonville.

The Dawson County Tigers and the Rabun County Wildcats, ranked No. 7 in AA, fought down to the final buzzer in one of the most exciting games in recent history.

JV girls look to rebound

The Dawson County junior varsity girls basketball team lost to Rabun County, 34-25, and Lumpkin County, 23-16, last week.

The Lady Tigers are currently 2-6 overall on the season.

JV boys drop two

The junior varsity boys basketball team dropped two games last week. Coach Wes Greer's team played competitively in both games, but just couldn't come away with the victory.

On Jan. 6, the boys lost to visiting Rabun County, 50-36. The Tigers traveled to Dahlonega on Jan. 7 and lost to a very good Lumpkin County team, 42-35.

Wrestlers dominate ‘Classic’

The Dawson County wrestling team captured first place at the Amicalola Classic tournament held at Dawson County High School last week.

The Dec. 29-30 event was split into two parts. On Thursday teams were placed into two pools and wrestled each other. The winner of the two pools met in the championship match later that night.

Ladies end tourney in fourth

Coach Steve Sweat's Dawson County High School varsity girls basketball team picked up a fourth place finish in the Battle of the States tournament at Towns County High School in Hiawassee last week.

The Lady Tigers took a 66-48 win over Murphy, N.C. in the opening game of the tournament on Dec. 27.

Boys finish third

Basketball coaches use pre-region games to get their troops ready for the grueling schedule that starts in January and early February. They want to figure out player rotations, team chemistry and how they react against good teams.

Coach Thad Burgess and his Tigers team traveled to Hiawassee to play in the prestigious Battle of the States Tournament hosted by Towns County last week.

Tigers well represented on all area teams

Dawson County was well represented on the Gainesville Times All-Area football team announced last week.

Two players were picked for second team honors while four others were named honorable mention.

Ladies dominate tourney

In what turned out to be an early Christmas present, the Dawson County Lady Tigers varsity basketball team captured the Pacelli Christmas Tournament with a 57-35 victory over the host team.

The tourney win capped a great week for coach Steve Sweat's team.

Champions again

Thad Burgess' Dawson County High School varsity Tigers basketball team is on a roll.

The team played in the Pacelli Christmas Tournament last week and came away with a championship trophy following a 56-22 win over host Pacelli High.

Tigers grapplers are 10-4

The Dawson County High School wrestling team raised its overall record to 10-4 with a convincing 69-9 win over Stephens County last week.

The Dec. 20 match was originally scheduled as a tri-meet in Toccoa, however, Smokey Mountain, N.C. wasn't able to make the event.

Head Coach Arron Haynes' Dawson County High School wrestling team won two of three matches last week. The Tigers are currently 8-4 overall on the season.

The Tigers traveled Dec. 13 to Dahlonega to wrestle Lumpkin County and White County.
