Team falls to Gilmer in overtime

Effort, guts, fight, determination; the list could go on and on for describing the Dawson County Tiger football team last Friday night.

Playing against a higher classification in Gilmer County on the road in front of a huge crowd, the Tigers fought hard but came up on the short end of a 26-20 overtime loss to the AAA Bobcats.

Walters head of the pack

Madalyn Walters captured first place at the Northeast Georgia Championships Aug. 27 at Athens Christian High.

Walters posted a National Elite time of 19:42.38 to take the title ahead of second place finisher Amanda Cope from Winder-Barrow.

Ladies excel on the field

The Lady Tiger softball team has opened the season with a spectacular 6-1 start after defeating Lumpkin County 2-1 Aug. 17 in Dahlonega.

Dawson scored its runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.

Tigers ready for opener

High school football will start for most teams in the state Friday night. It will be a chance for players and coaches to see how far they have come after all the weight training, agilities, passing camps and conditioning over the summer.

The time is now for the Dawson County football team. The Tigers open the season with a showdown against neighboring Pickens County High School on Friday night at a renovated Tiger Stadium.

JV ladies lose to Lumpkin

The Dawson County High School Lady Tigers junior varsity softball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Lumpkin County Aug. 17.

Following the loss, Dawson County is currently 0-2 on the year.

Team third in tourney

It was a festive atmosphere at Lanier Point Softball Complex in Gainesville. There was a huge crowd on hand to see local teams open the 2011 softball season.

Teams from all over the area competed Aug. 13 in the 10th Annual Lanier Point Invitational.

Cross county rivals face off

Opening of softball season is a special time for middle school sports in Dawson County. Aug. 9 saw the first game of the season for both Dawson County and Riverview middle schools.

Playing on a new field at Dawson County Middle School, the Riverview Lady Eagles spoiled the opener for Dawson County and came away with an 18-12 win.

Game provides ‘good look’ at team

The Dawson County High School Lady Tigers junior varsity softball team opened the 2011 season with a 12-0 loss at North Forsyth on Aug. 11.

"We got a chance to take a good look at all the players," Head Coach Nickie Rogers said. "Everybody got in the game against a really good team in North Forsyth."

Tigers scrimmage GACS

Last week's scrimmage against Greater Atlanta Christian School was not the kind of start Head Coach Jeff Lee hoped for at the newly renovated Tiger Stadium.

On the first play from scrimmage, the visiting Spartans ran a toss sweep on the Dawson County defense. Eighty yards and eight seconds later, DaSean Daniels from GACS was in the end zone.

Kick-off draws near

Football is back. Despite the hot and humid days of July and August, head coach Jeff Lee and his 70-plus football players began practice at midnight Monday.

The excitement was in the air as the Tigers football coaches ran the players through conditioning and drills early Monday morning.

Teams sprint into season

Summer break is coming to a close for Dawson County High School students, but the school's cross country program has yet to take a break. Both the boys and girls teams have used the summer months to prepare for the upcoming season beginning this month.

Runners have trained at least two days a week to prepare themselves for the 3.1 miles they must run in each meet.

Softball tryouts next week

The Dawson County High School Lady Tigers softball team will hold tryouts from 9 a.m. until noon Aug. 1.

Tryouts will be held for all girls interested in playing either junior varsity or varsity softball at the school.
