Student signs with West Georgia
Dawson County High School senior Harley Vaughan made an important decision last week. Vaughan signed a scholarship Feb. 7 to continue his football career at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton. Vaughan is the 20th athlete that has signed a football scholarship under Coach Jeff Lee's training program since Lee has been at the high school.
Three will represent DCHS at state traditionals
Gavin Brown, Evan Kells and Keaton Toal will represent the Dawson County wrestling team at the State Traditionals in Macon this weekend. The tournament will be held this weekend at the Macon Centreplex.
On the right track
Dawson County High School varsity girls' basketball team is headed in the right direction coming into the Region 7-AAA tournament this week. The Lady Tigers, coached by Steve Sweat, won their final two regular season games. The team defeated North Hall, 66-61, on Feb. 5, and finished the regular season with a decisive 70-32 win in Oakwood against West Hall on Feb. 8.
Boys team loses three
The Dawson County High School varsity boys basketball team is on a three game losing streak. The three consecutive losses are a first since February of 2011. Almost two years to the day, Dawson County has now lost games to Buford, North Hall and West Hall.
Ladies out-kick Johnson in exhibition
Senior Jade Perry led the Lady Tiger varsity soccer team to a dominating 3-0 win over Johnson last Thursday in an exhibition match in Dawsonville. Perry scored to put Dawson County ahead with 37:26 remaining in the second half after a scoreless first half. Taylor Bennett recorded an assist on the play.
Tigers take close one over Johnson
Dawson County High School head soccer coach Jed Lacey got a great look at the 2013 edition of his varsity boys soccer team in an exhibition win over a talented Johnson team, 5-4, last week. Johnson is currently ranked No. 6 in Class AA in the preseason coach's poll. The Tigers are also ranked. The team is currently No. 10 in Class AAA.
Tigers on top in two matches
Dawson County held a tri-match Jan. 29 with Forsyth Central and Riverside Military Academy. The Tigers were victorious and defeated Central, 51-21, and Riverside, 51-27. With the two wins Coach Arron Haynes' squad improved to 34-8 this season. This is the second most wins in school history.
Ladies move to 19-4 on season
Last week got off to a great start for the Dawson County Lady Tiger varsity basketball team. The Lady Tigers defeated visiting East Hall on Jan. 28 by a 64-50 score. The game was a makeup game due to bad weather the week before.
Boys take 2 of 3
Dawson County High School varsity boys basketball team won two of three games last week. The Tigers, led by Thad Burgess, defeated East Hall, 60-49, on Jan. 28 and Banks County, 44-30, on Jan. 29, before dropping a 52-38 decision to a very tough Buford team on Friday.
Tigers split with Gainesville, Lumpkin
The Dawson County High School varsity Tiger wrestling team hosted a tri-match with Gainesville and Lumpkin County last week. The Tigers, led by coach Arron Haynes, were victorious over Gainesville, 60-16, but dropped a 46-21 decision to the Indians at the Jan. 22 event.
Ladies on a roll
The Dawson County Lady Tiger basketball team is on fire. Head Coach Steve Sweat's squad pulled out a 66-52 win at White County on Jan. 22.
Boys team ranked 9 in Class AAA
Strong defense and timely offense have been the trademarks of this year's Dawson County High School varsity Tiger basketball team. Both were evident last week with the Tigers taking a 47-34 win over White County on a hostile floor in Cleveland on Tuesday night.
Elliott to run truck series
Hendrick Motorsports announced last week that Dawsonville's Chase Elliott will run nine races in the NASCAR's World Truck Series this year. Driving the No. 94 Aaron's Chevrolet, the son of NASCAR champion Bill Elliott said he's honored to have Aaron's support as he takes steps in his promising racing career.
Ladies stand at 17-2
The Class AAA No. 8-ranked Dawson County Lady Tigers won three games last week. Coach Steve Sweat's team improved its record to 17-2 with wins over West Hall, Fannin County and Rabun County.
Tigers win at Philips Arena
After losing back to back games against state-ranked Region 7-AAA teams, Buford and North Hall, the Tigers bounced back last week to win three games. More importantly for the Tigers, two of the teams' opponents, West Hall and Fannin County, are region foes.

Led team to state championship
When he began coaching basketball, Dawson County's Steve Sweat never imagined that he would be coaching a girls' team, much less guiding them to a state championship game. Sweat started out coaching a boys basketball program, but when he changed schools to work closer to home, the only position available was as an assistant coach to the girls basketball team. Ladies 9-1 overall
The Lady Tigers completed their toughest week of the season so far last week. Dawson County split games with an overtime win against West Hall, 3-2, and a loss at No. 1-ranked in Class AAA Blessed Trinity on Thursday, 2-0.
Gilreath player of the year
Dawson County senior Carly Gilreath had a couple of big goals to accomplish in her final high school season. First, she wanted to surpass 1,000 points for her career, something she did back in December in a win over Hoke's Bluff, Ala. in the Battle of the States tournament in Hiawassee.
Tough week for Tigers
Coach Jed Lacey knew last week was going to be tough for his Tiger soccer team. Playing two ranked teams in three days is physically and mentally demanding. The Tigers split games with a 3-0 win over West Hall on Tuesday before dropping a 3-0 decision to Blessed Trinity on Thursday.
Battle of two top 10s
Friday was a battle between two Class AAA top 10- ranked teams as the No. 4 Lady Tigers played a tough match against No. 7-ranked White County (7-3) at Tiger Stadium. Dawson County came out on top with a 1-0 victory.
Boys win hard fought game
Dawson County High School varsity soccer coach Jed Lacey was noticeably unhappy with how his third-ranked Dawson County Tigers played against White County on March 22 at Tiger Stadium. "It was a very sluggish game," Lacey said. "I knew coming back from the Tournament of Champions in Jekyll Island we would have to get the engines going again. This was not one of our better games, but we pushed through it and did enough to win. I'm glad we got that game out of our system."
Weather hinders team
Fighting the elements and some good Class AAA teams, the Dawson County High School varsity Tigers baseball team went 1-2 last week. Weather was an issue last week. On March 18, the Tigers were rained out against White County. The game was pushed back a day and was played on March 19 in Cleveland. Dawson County came out on the good end of a 4-3 win.
