MACON - Playing in their first state championship game since 1991, the Dawson County High girls came up on the short end of a 77-55 decision to St. Pius X in the Class AAA state championship game on Saturday at the Macon Centreplex. The Golden Lions from Region 6-AAA jumped out to an 11-1 lead before Dawson County rallied behind the play of post player Ashley Parker.
Region 7-AAA selected its All-Region team last week. The team, voted on by coaches, chose Ebo Smith from North Hall and Carly Gilreath from Dawson County as Player-of-the-Year recipients. Selected for the girls' first team were Gilreath, Lady Tiger teammate Sheyenne Seabolt, Buford players Kristina Nelson, Maya Dillard, and Mackenzie Darrah and Taylor Kennedy from Banks County.
Three Dawson County High School basketball players will take part in the North Georgia All-Star Classic Saturday at Gainesville High School. Seniors Carly Gilreath, Tyler Dominy and Will Anglin all plan to take part.
The Dawson County High School varsity boys soccer team remained undefeated last week following a 6-0 smashing of Jackson County High School March 12 in Jefferson. The Tigers, currently ranked No. 3 in Class AAA, have a 4-0 record for the season.
It was Dawson County's toughest test of the season at Jackson County last week. The Lady Tigers soccer team matched up with a skilled Lady Panther squad.

Dawson County scored seven first half goals in a 7-0 shutout of Pickens High School Feb. 27 in Jasper. The Lady Tigers are currently ranked No. 4 in Class AAA.

On a bitterly cold and windy afternoon the Dawson County High School boys and girls track teams opened their seasons with a tri-meet against Jackson County and Johnson. Both teams came away victorious. The Tigers scored 33 points and routed Johnson's 28 points and Jackson County's 24 points.
It took five innings before Dawson County could muster a hit, but once that happened it led to three runs and a come from behind 4-3 victory against Lumpkin County on Feb. 25. Head coach Jimmy Pruett's team picked up its first win of the season.

Phillips Gymnasium erupted as the final buzzer sounded that gave Dawson County High School varsity girls basketball coach Steve Sweat's Lady Tigers a come from behind victory over visiting Decatur. The Lady Tigers came out on the better end of a 52-47 score. An emotional Sweat could hardly contain his excitement as he hugged assistant coach Anne Hyams on the sideline.
The Dawson County High School boys cross country team competed at the Mountain Invitational Meet at Unicoi State Park Oct. 3 in Helen.
