Tigers ranked No. 3 in AAA

The Dawson County High School varsity boys soccer team, ranked No. 3 in Class AAA, shutout Pickens County High School, 8-0, last week in Jasper. Despite the cold and the wind, the Tigers scored four goals in each half to pick up the team's third win in as many games. The Tigers remain undefeated.

Tri-meet starts season

On a bitterly cold and windy afternoon the Dawson County High School boys and girls track teams opened their seasons with a tri-meet against Jackson County and Johnson. Both teams came away victorious. The Tigers scored 33 points and routed Johnson's 28 points and Jackson County's 24 points.

Split with Lumpkin

It took five innings before Dawson County could muster a hit, but once that happened it led to three runs and a come from behind 4-3 victory against Lumpkin County on Feb. 25. Head coach Jimmy Pruett's team picked up its first win of the season.

Lady Tigers win

SAVANNAH --Dawson County senior Carly Gilreath had an idea it might be a good night. "I was telling my team before the game that I didn't miss a shot during warmups," she said, "and that they should knock on wood that it continues."

Final Four bound

The Ford E. Phillips Gymnasium erupted as the final buzzer sounded that gave Dawson County High School varsity girls basketball coach Steve Sweat's Lady Tigers a come from behind victory over visiting Decatur. The Lady Tigers came out on the better end of a 52-47 score. An emotional Sweat could hardly contain his excitement as he hugged assistant coach Anne Hyams on the sideline.

Elite Eight

For the first time since 1992, the Dawson County High School varsity girls' basketball team is one of the final eight teams remaining in the state tournament. The Lady Tigers played in the third round of the tournament in three consecutive years from 1990-92.

While the weather was cool for the Lady Tigers varsity soccer game on Wednesday, the action on the field was anything but.

Boys team is ranked 6th in class

The Dawson County High School varsity boys soccer program is currently ranked No. 6 in Class AAA. The ranking is the highest ever held by the boys' program according to head coach Jed Lacey.

Boys season comes to end

Last year's Cinderella team had their hearts broken in the first round of the state playoffs this season. Head Coach Thad Burgess' Dawson County High School varsity boys basketball team saw its season come to an end at Woodward Academy Feb. 20 by a 51-39 score.

Tigers take the field

The Dawson County High School varsity baseball team started its season Thursday with a 9-2 loss against Forsyth Central. Despite the loss, according to coaches this year could be a banner year for the Tigers. The team moved up a classification to Region 7-AAA and will play the likes of Buford, North Hall, West Hall and White County.

Brown captures second

Sophomore Tiger wrestler Gavin Brown captured a second place finish Saturday during the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Macon. Brown (182-pounds) lost in the finals to Chip Ness from Buford High School.

State bound

The Lady Tigers basketball team is headed to the state tournament. Head coach Steve Sweat's team finished the season as the Region 7-AAA runners-up. With the second place region finish, Dawson County was able to host the first round of the state tournament. The game will be played at 6 p.m. tonight against Blessed Trinity. Results were not available as of the posting of this story.

Tigers lose five of last six

The Dawson County boys basketball team couldn't find a worse time to be in a slump. The Tigers have currently lost five of the team's last six games, which is something that hasn't happened often in head coach Thad Burgess' tenure.

Ladies outlast Rabun

A young but talented varsity Lady Tiger soccer team took to the pitch last week against visiting Rabun County. Coach Jed Lacey's team dominated the Feb. 15 game and took a 9-0 win over the Lady Wildcats from Tiger.

Boys ranked No. 8 in AAA

The No. 8 ranked in Class AAA Dawson County High School varsity boys soccer team recorded a 4-0 win over Rabun County on Friday night at Tiger Stadium. Dawson County jumped out fast and scored a goal off the foot of Josh Lund only four minutes into the game. Jose Miranda recorded the assist.

Led team to state championship

When he began coaching basketball, Dawson County's Steve Sweat never imagined that he would be coaching a girls' team, much less guiding them to a state championship game. Sweat started out coaching a boys basketball program, but when he changed schools to work closer to home, the only position available was as an assistant coach to the girls basketball team. Ladies 9-1 overall

The Lady Tigers completed their toughest week of the season so far last week. Dawson County split games with an overtime win against West Hall, 3-2, and a loss at No. 1-ranked in Class AAA Blessed Trinity on Thursday, 2-0.

Gilreath player of the year

Dawson County senior Carly Gilreath had a couple of big goals to accomplish in her final high school season. First, she wanted to surpass 1,000 points for her career, something she did back in December in a win over Hoke's Bluff, Ala. in the Battle of the States tournament in Hiawassee.

Tough week for Tigers

Coach Jed Lacey knew last week was going to be tough for his Tiger soccer team. Playing two ranked teams in three days is physically and mentally demanding. The Tigers split games with a 3-0 win over West Hall on Tuesday before dropping a 3-0 decision to Blessed Trinity on Thursday.

Battle of two top 10s

Friday was a battle between two Class AAA top 10- ranked teams as the No. 4 Lady Tigers played a tough match against No. 7-ranked White County (7-3) at Tiger Stadium. Dawson County came out on top with a 1-0 victory.

Boys win hard fought game

Dawson County High School varsity soccer coach Jed Lacey was noticeably unhappy with how his third-ranked Dawson County Tigers played against White County on March 22 at Tiger Stadium. "It was a very sluggish game," Lacey said. "I knew coming back from the Tournament of Champions in Jekyll Island we would have to get the engines going again. This was not one of our better games, but we pushed through it and did enough to win. I'm glad we got that game out of our system."

Weather hinders team

Fighting the elements and some good Class AAA teams, the Dawson County High School varsity Tigers baseball team went 1-2 last week. Weather was an issue last week. On March 18, the Tigers were rained out against White County. The game was pushed back a day and was played on March 19 in Cleveland. Dawson County came out on the good end of a 4-3 win.
