Wreck kills 1, injures 3

A Dawsonville man was among the 19 people killed in wrecks statewide over the July Fourth holiday weekend.

Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden said Michael Martinez Moreno, 27, was pronounced dead Saturday night at Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

Residents raise fuss over utility tower

Residents of a gated subdivision in southeastern Dawson County are angry about a utility tower recently erected without warning near their homes.

"Would you like to have that tower next your home? I want you to be honest with me. Would you want that in your backyard?" Ivan Ruiz asked representatives of Etowah Water and Sewer Authority last week.

Memorial fund established for youth

A memorial fund has been set up for a 16-year-old who died June 6 after he was struck by a vehicle on Hwy. 53 near Dawsonville, while riding his skateboard.

Contributions may be made to the Tyler Seay Memorial Fund at any United Community Bank.

Veteran markers will be put out Wednesday

Members of Etowah Masonic Lodge No. 222, Free & Accepted Masons, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter No. 970, Dawsonville Lions Club and Dawson County Jaycees will be placing Veterans memorial markers today for this year's Independence Day in the City of Dawsonville.

The markers are to honor deceased men and women who have served honorably in one of the branches of military service.

Local group aims to help veterans

The Vietnam Veterans of America's local chapter is offering a few new programs for families of veterans in case of emergencies.

The chapter is providing a planning guide to help with the planning and decision making of the funeral and burial services. The guide includes simple steps to prepare for the end of life event, a list of important documents needed when arranging the funeral and information on burial benefits.

Officials urge residents to practice water safety

As temperatures climb, many Dawson County residents will be headed to the water in an effort to escape the heat.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, swimming is one of the most popular sports in the country. Though swimming does offer an easy way to stay cool and keep active during the summer months, it may also lead to dangers such as injury or drowning.

‘Keep kids safe’

A new state law that takes effect Friday will keep children in car safety seats until their eighth birthday.

Signed into law in May, the requirement is designed to reduce the risk of child injuries and fatalities on state roads.

City mourns loss of icon

A man who spent nearly four decades serving the city of Dawsonville died Monday at age 92 following a period of declining health.

Born about 10 miles outside of town, G. L. "Pete" Gilleland and his family moved to Dawsonville when he was 7.

Area man Vietnam vet of the year

If David Hildebrand knew the truth behind his invitation to the Georgia State Council of Vietnam Veterans' meeting earlier this month, he said he would have stayed home.

It was there in Macon on June 18 that the Dahlonega man was named Georgia's Vietnam Veteran of the Year.

Firework extravaganza offers fun for family

Red, white and blue sparks will soar over Rock Creek Park on Saturday night when Dawson County kicks off the Independence Day weekend with a fireworks extravaganza.

Presented by the Dawson County Board of Commissioners and Dawson Community News, Dawson Day Sparks in the Park begins at 5 p.m. with activities for the entire family.

Fire displaces 4 families

Fire officials continue to investigate an apartment blaze early Saturday that displaced four families and forced several people to escape by jumping from a second floor window.

"This was such a huge loss ... there's still a lot to look into," said Lanier Swafford, chief of Dawson County Emergency Services.
