City dedicates room to late mayor Cox

The community room at the Dawsonville Municipal Complex was designated as the "Joe Lane Cox Community Room" on Thursday in memory of the late mayor.

Cox, who was 72, was three months into his third term as mayor when he died on March 9.

Soldier’s death brings sadness to Dawsonville

DAWSONVILLE - A staff sergeant from Dawsonville who was killed in Afghanistan last week is being remembered as a loving family man and dedicated soldier.

Alexander G. Povilaitis, 47, died when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Defense.

Hamalainen receives award

Pam Hamalainen, president of Veterans Affairs of Dawson County, was surprised last month when she received a certificate from Gov. Nathan Deal appointing her "Lieutenant Colonel, Aide De Camp Governor's Staff formed for the defense of the State."

"It was very unexpected. I was humbled, I didn't feel I had done that much," she said.

Local soldier killed in action

The Department of Defense announced Saturday that Staff Sgt. Alexander G. Povilaitis of Dawsonville was killed in action Thursday in Afghanistan.

Battery recycling offered locally

Battery recycling soon will be available free of charge at the Dawson County Transfer Station.

Beginning June 4, county residents can dispose of single-use batteries that will be recycled to keep hazardous materials such as mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel out of landfills.

Racing Hall of Fame 10 years old

The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame reached a milestone this past week as it celebrated its 10th year.

Opening in 2002, the museum, originally a tourist attraction called "Thunder Road," has overcome numerous obstacles along the way.

Veterans to be honored

Dawson County residents are invited to attend the annual Memorial Day service at noon Monday at Veterans Memorial Park.

The event is scheduled to feature the changing of the flags and a speech by keynote speaker and retired Col. Patricia Zaudtke of Lumpkin County.

Community rallies for business owner

Originally organized by the Georgia Municipal Association, the statewide contest asks sixth grade students to write about what they would do if they were their city's mayor.

Overnight event set for Friday

Relay for Life of Dawson County is scheduled to kick off its nightlong festivities at 7 p.m. Friday at Veterans Memorial Park.

In recent years, hundreds of residents have joined in the fight against cancer.

Search, rescue exercises prepare for emergencies

Dawson County Emergency Services personnel and members of the Georgia Wing Civil Air Patrol conducted a search and rescue exercise Saturday in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

The search exercise involved an adult missing from their camping area for more than 24 hours in Dawson Forest. Ground and air patrol were tasked to find the person.

Library program serves local youth

The Chestatee Regional Library System kicked off a new outreach service last month that aims to bring books to children in remote locations in Dawson and Lumpkin counties.

The Booker Mobile, named after the library mascot Booker the Dog, will visit locations after school and during the summer to allow children to check out up to five books and learn about library services.
