Each year, hundreds of scrap tires are illegally dumped along roadways, creating threats to the environment, public health and safety.
In an effort to decrease the number of scrap tires in the area, Keep Dawson County Beautiful offers Dawson County residents a scrap tire amnesty day from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Dawson County Transfer Station.

Ask brothers Ernie, Dan and Bill Elliott and they'll agree their dad George Elliott should have been named to the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame years ago.
"He was instrumental in a lot of people's careers in racing, especially ours," said Ernie Elliott. "It was just a sport that he loved. If it wouldn't have been for him getting it started, starting us in it, we wouldn't have been able to accomplish what we did."
Local authorities want parents to remember the war on drugs starts at home.
Each day, nearly 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.
Local attorney Joey Homans was installed last week as president of the Dawson County Kiwanis Club by the group's 2011 President Lisa Thurmond.
"There's a lot of opportunities to be involved in community activities in Dawson County. Kiwanis is the way I've been able to tap into the community," Homans said. "I hope to just continue along the path that Lisa Thurmond set and continue to be positive to grow and strengthen our club."
