Cycling for a cure

A local man will be among some 5,000 cyclists riding through Massachusetts this weekend to help fight cancer.

Brian Hood of Dawsonville said the overall goal is to raise $34 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston for cancer research and treatment.

Friends say Gennie Melinda "Linda" Grant, 62, will be remembered for her devotion to her son and commitment to her hometown.

DOT delays intersection work

Just days after announcing work was set to begin on the intersection of Ga. 400 and Kilough Church Road, state transportation officials delayed the project.

The plan called for installing concrete medians, closing the crossing and eliminating the option for drivers to turn left from Kilough Church Road.

Local site in running for America’s Favorite Park

The honor of America's Favorite Park is up for grabs and a park in Dawsonville is in the running.

Amicalola Falls State Park, home of the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River, is trailing in fifth place for a chance to win a $100,000 recreation grant from Coca-Cola. The second place park will receive a $50,000 grant and third place will receive $25,000.

Elliott patriarch to join Hall

George Elliott, late resident of Dawson County and father of NASCAR great Bill Elliott, headlines the 2011 class of inductees to the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

Mike Head, Harold Kite, Swayne Pritchett and Ken Ragan will join Elliott as the newest members of the hall.

Rex White will serve as Grand Marshal of festival

Rex White, former NASCAR champion and member of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, will serve as grand marshal for the 44th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival this October.

White won the 1960 Winston Cup, and is NASCAR's oldest living champion.

Travel Channel films episode in Dawson

A film crew from the Travel Channel was in Dawsonville last week, filming for an episode of America's Wildest Roads to air in November.

The crew, assisted by several community members, filmed a staged car chase between one of the first Georgia State Patrol Cars, a 1937 Ford, and two former 'shine hauling cars, a 1939 Ford and a 1948 Ford.

Fathers, sons display art

The Dawson County Arts Council held an opening reception July 9 at the Bowen Center for the Arts for its current Father's & Son's exhibit.

The exhibit, which will run through the end of the month, features artwork created by the father-and-son teams of James Daniel Sr. and Jr. and Doug and Tyler King.

Canoe race to benefit center elevator fund

Proceeds from a canoe and kayak race on the Etowah River Aug. 6 will help fund an elevator at the Dawson County Senior Center.

"We're so grateful to have this. The seniors really need an elevator," said Margie Weaver, center director. "We're so close and this will be a really big help to us."

Changes coming to Kilough Church Rd.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the Kilough Church Road-Ga. 400 crossing next week while the intersection is rerouted.

State Department of Transportation crews will be installing concrete medians and signs similar to those found at Beartooth Parkway and Ga. 400.

More than a dozen emergency workers were recognized last week for making a difference in the lives of Dawson County residents in life threatening medical distress.

Each of the individuals honored at last week's county commission meeting "contributed to save a cardiac patient," said Dawson County Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford.

Dawsonville recognized again as regional site

For the fifth consecutive year, Dawsonville has been recognized by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs as a 2011 Veterans Day Regional Site.

"It's not an easy task," said Pam Hamalainen, president of the Veterans Affairs Committee of Dawson County. "We're proud to have been chosen as one of two sites in Georgia. It shows that we're right up there with the big dogs."
