Sparks in the Park set for Tuesday

The whistle and cracks of firecrackers will once again resound through Rock Creek Park on Tuesday night as Dawson County celebrates Independence Day.

In its fourth year, Dawson Day Sparks in the Park is set to begin at 5 p.m. with activities for the entire family.

Youth organizes 5K

A local youth plans to donate proceeds from a 5K race he organized to help a group of women signed up to participate in the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer.

Jared Posey, 11, of Dawsonville said he invites the community out to Rock Creek Park on Friday afternoon for the race. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and is $5 per person.

Habitat hopeful to build locally

Officials with Habitat for Humanity remain hopeful about building homes in Dawson County.

"We would love to build in Dawson County," said Mary Lamond, the group's North Central Georgia director. "Our biggest struggle is land, finding land at a reasonable price."

Local produce market opens

Locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers will roll in by the truckload Saturday as the Dawson County Extension Office's annual produce market opens.

Running every Saturday through mid-September, the produce market will be open from 7:30 to 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the extension office at 298 Academy Avenue.

Folk art flourishes

Known for offering an array of folk art and crafts, the seventh annual Folk Art Family Reunion will be held this weekend at Around Back at Rocky's Place.

More than 20 artists from around the Southeast sell drawings, pottery and other creations during the festival. Co-owner Robin Blan said the festival is an outpouring of artistic creativity.

Senior Center water aerobics underway

Stepping into the pool at Veterans Memorial Park, seniors gathered last week to begin a water-logged aerobics class hosted by the Dawson County Senior Center.

In only its second year, the SilverSneakers "Silver Splash" aerobics class has had an outpouring of community citizens attend.

Art transforms building

A reception earlier this month paid tribute to local artists whose works are on display at the Dawson County Government Center.

County native Amber Gilleland said she was honored to have her paintings hanging on the fourth floor of the new center.

Park looks for votes

Veterans Memorial Park is competing for a $100,000 grant and to be voted as "America's Favorite Park" in a nationwide competition sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company and FourSquare.

The park that tallies the most votes receives the title and the grant, which can be used for park needs.

Wreck injures three

A local historian and his wife suffered serious injuries in a head-on collision Saturday afternoon near the Dawson-Forsyth county line.

Charles and Kathy Finley of Dawsonville were flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta in critical condition following a two-vehicle wreck about 4:15 p.m. on Hwy. 53, just east of War Hill Park Road.
