Change your clocks, batteries

Dawson County Emergency Services urges residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarm when they change their clocks as daylight savings time ends Sunday.

"Having a working smoke alarm reduces your chances of dying in a fire by nearly half," Dawson County Emergency Services Deputy Chief Tim Satterfield said. "Batteries in smoke alarms should be replaced twice a year. Change your clocks, change your batteries."

Free health fair is Saturday at church

Dozens of healthcare professionals will offer free health screenings Saturday at Cornerstone Christian Church in Dawsonville.

Free health screenings will be available to everyone beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at 236 Etowah River Road.

Christmas Eve will mark the beginning of Col. James "Lindy" Linder's 30th year in the United States Air Force.

"It has shaped who I am as a person. I have greatly appreciated my opportunities as I have served. From being an instructor and then evaluator, from a commander to a director, all the positions have been fascinating challenges," he said. "I have worked for all types of leaders and have learned from them all. My assignments have been all over the world, have pushed me outside of my comfort zone, and taught me an incredible amount."

KARE taking applications for assistance this Christmas

Dispose of scrap tires this weekend

Each year, hundreds of scrap tires are illegally dumped along roadways, creating threats to the environment, public health and safety.

In an effort to decrease the number of scrap tires in the area, Keep Dawson County Beautiful offers Dawson County residents a scrap tire amnesty day from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Dawson County Transfer Station.

Driver injured in tractor trailer wreck

A tractor-trailer driver escaped serious injury Oct. 26 when his vehicle careened down an embankment on Hwy. 52, just east of Amicalola Falls State Park.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Sherman Edward Corn of Cleveland, was able to crawl out of the truck and up to the road, emergency workers said.

Appeal filed in dispute

Dawsonville officials say they are not fazed that the battle over construction of a motorsports park in western Dawson County has shifted to the Georgia Supreme Court.

"We're sticking to our guns," Mayor Joe Lane Cox said of the appeal filed Oct. 26. "Judge [John] Girardeau ruled in our favor before and I think that will happen with this one, too."

‘A way of giving back’

It was a chilly Saturday morning, but not too cold for a motorcycle ride through the north Georgia mountains to help raise funds for children at Christmas.

"When we woke up, it was 38 degrees and had been raining just a couple hours earlier," said organizer Lt. Doug Boyle with the Dawson County Sheriff's Office.

A Flat Creek Drive home appears to be a complete loss after a fire Oct. 26 in downtown Dawsonville.

"There's heat damage through the entire home," said Dawson County Emergency Services Battalion Chief Robby Lee.

Racing hall honors this year’s inductees

Ask brothers Ernie, Dan and Bill Elliott and they'll agree their dad George Elliott should have been named to the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame years ago.

"He was instrumental in a lot of people's careers in racing, especially ours," said Ernie Elliott. "It was just a sport that he loved. If it wouldn't have been for him getting it started, starting us in it, we wouldn't have been able to accomplish what we did."

Agents inspect distillery

Federal agents reportedly paid a surprise visit to downtown Dawsonville early Friday, ready to shut down what they had been told was an active moonshine operation.

Instead, the agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives left several hours later after determining the alleged tip was false.

Focus is the kids

Organizers say the 44th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival in downtown Dawsonville was a record breaker.

"I've never seen people start arriving on Wednesday for the festival," said Gordon Pirkle, a longtime member of KARE for Kids, which organizes the event.

Keep kids safe this Halloween

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office and Emergency Management Agency reminds parents to make sure children are safe this Halloween.

With Halloween on Monday, motorists should also anticipate finding trick-or-treaters on local roads and neighborhoods as early as 5 p.m.
