Booths available for weekend yard sale

Editor's note: In the weeks leading up to Relay for Life, Dawson Community News will feature stories of hope, survivorship and fundraising events intended to increase cancer awareness in the community. The series will also include articles on prevention, early detection and treatment options.

Booth space is available for a community yard sale this weekend at Rock Creek Park.

Egg hunt raises funds

With the sun beating down on their shoulders, hundreds of children stormed the field to claim bright-colored eggs during the 26th annual Community Easter Egg Hunt.

Earlier on Saturday, KARE for Kids' volunteers had spread more than 20,000 hard plastic eggs across the fields at Veterans Memorial Park.

County to dedicate time capsule

The community is invited to a ceremony Thursday to dedicate a 30-year time capsule that will be buried at the new Dawson County Government Center.

The time capsule will be placed in a flower bed in front of the building and identified with a granite marker that will list the installation date as well as the year it is to be opened.

Chamber remembers late official

The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce honored late Dawsonville Mayor Joe Lane Cox on Monday night by presenting a proclamation to his family and the city council.

Fundraiser benefits cause

Tickets are now on sale for a barbecue chicken fundraiser next week at Julia's Neighborhood Deli.

Sponsored by SunTrust Bank and the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, proceeds from the April 10 dinner will benefit Relay for Life, an overnight event in May that celebrates survivorship, while raising money for cancer research and programs.

Local soldier returns from Afghanistan

A special homecoming celebration was delayed a couple weeks for U.S. Army PFC Tyler Youngblood who arrived in Atlanta last month from an 11-month tour in Afghanistan.

Mother Anita Youngblood said life is great, knowing her son is back home safe.

Governor speaks on literacy

As part of "Read Across Georgia" month, Gov. Nathan Deal and wife Sandra have touted literacy initiatives in visits across the state.

Last week, the Deals talked about the importance of literacy during the Certified Literate Community Program's state retreat at Amicalola Falls Lodge.

Film fans flock to movie set

As word spread that movie legend Clint Eastwood and actress Amy Adams would be in Dawsonville last week, residents and film fans began flocking to the set at Amicalola Lodge.

"I heard about the movie because a location scout visited my brother, who lives in the neighborhood right across from the set," said Sean Sears, a Dahlonega resident. "I have been out here a couple days now."

KARE for Kids keeps busy hosting fundraisers

Even with early morning rain, motorcycles began rolling into downtown last Saturday for the KARE for Kids Fourth Annual Motorcycle Poker Run.

Riders dressed in leather gear and festive green accessories for St. Patrick's Day departed at 10 a.m. for a slick ride around Dawson County.

Canines comforting

To a child beginning to read, words on a page can often be a maze of foreign symbols. Navigating them can be a daunting and nerve-wracking task.

Reading to Dogs, a special program offered monthly at the Dawson County Library, looks to ease children's anxiety by allowing participants to practice reading to therapy dogs.

Local GOP encourages youth involvement

Republicans across the state met recently to select delegates to send to regional and state GOP conventions later this spring.

Poker run benefits man injured on trip

It had been more than a decade since James and Barbara Carnes had last taken a vacation.

"We were on a cruise to Costa Maya, Mexico, but it turned into a nightmare," Barbara Carnes said recalling the trip last November that left her husband without use of his arms and legs.

Motorcycle fatality under investigation

One person from Forsyth County was killed and another injured in a two-vehicle wreck Sunday afternoon on Ga. 400 in Dawson County.

Emergency workers said Krista Stein, 47, was thrown from the motorcycle on which she was traveling with her husband and died at the scene.

Dawsonville is seeing stars

Movie legend Clint Eastwood was scheduled to arrive Tuesday in Dawsonville to begin filming scenes at a local motel.

The Warner Brothers' production "Trouble with the Curve" stars Eastwood as an aging baseball scout who travels to Atlanta with his daughter to see a hot prospect.
