Longtime chamber president, local leader dies

The Dawson County community is mourning the death of a local civic volunteer and retired business leader this week.

Linda Williams, longtime president of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, died Wednesday after a period of declining health. She was 64.

‘It is a heart thing’

After 29 hours aboard airplanes and packed vans, several Dawson County residents arrived in eastern Uganda to "spread the love of Christ."

The locals teamed up with Helping Hands Foreign Missions, a Gainesville-based Christian ministry, to visit Ugandan schools, churches and bush villages for two weeks last month.

Local deli owner dies

A downtown business owner and member of the Dawsonville Planning Commission was found dead Tuesday morning in her restaurant on the square.

According to employees at Julia's Neighborhood Deli, 44-year-old Julia Cody was unconscious and not breathing when they arrived to open the eatery for the lunch shift about 10 a.m.

Memorial ride set for Saturday

Area sheriff's deputies are showing their support for the family of two brothers killed on Lake Lanier earlier this summer with a benefit memorial ride and car show Saturday.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Hall, Lumpkin and Forsyth County sheriff's offices, invites the community to participate in the Griffin and Jake Prince Memorial Ride and Classic Car Cruise-In.

Campmeeting filled with reunions, guest speakers

Campmeeting concluded its annual weeklong festivities at Lumpkin Campground on Sunday evening.

Filled with church services, singing and fellowship, the event gathered dozens of local families and friends together for seven days in the rustic, wooded setting.

DOT to start work on bridge

The Georgia Department of Transportation is planning to rebuild the Ga. 53/Jasper Highway bridge over the Amicalola Creek west of Tinsley Chapel Road in Dawson County.

The work will mean reducing traffic over the bridge to one lane from July 30 to Aug. 13.

Sock hop event takes seniors back in time

Elvis Presley's classic "You Ain't Nothin' but a Hound Dog," blared through the speakers during last week's sock hop at the Dawson County Senior Center.

In true style, ladies wore poodle skirts, classic pop hits were played and the dance floor was lively.

‘Holy place’

The rusty chains of the porch swing gently squeaked as Carolyn Dooley relaxed outside her family's Lumpkin Campground tent.

"Campmeeting is something I would never miss," said Dooley, 54. "And in my life I have never missed one."

Lifelong educator, former college dean dies

A renowned Dawson County educator and former dean at Gainesville State College died Thursday morning following a period of declining health.

Herbert W. Robinson, 95, had been sick for several months, according to family and close friends.

Farmers offer fresh fare

Dawsonville resident Grace Collett has been selling her homegrown vegetables during the Dawson County Farmer's Market for nearly 10 years.

Tomatoes, squash, beans, cucumbers and eggplant were among the produce offered at her table July 11.

Arts council presents first adult musical

Opening this Friday, the Dawson County Arts Council is presenting its first adult musical, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."

Based on the popular 1988 film, the musical is a comedy revolving around playful banter, mischievous scams and sudden twists.

New women’s republican group forms

A new group has formed with a mission to get more women involved in the political process.

Based in Dawson County but pulling from all counties in the new 9th congressional district, the Foothills Republican Women is a grassroots organization that promotes an informed public through political education and activity by increasing the effectiveness of women in government.

Early voting under way

Advance voting for the July 31 general primary is currently under way and continues through July 27.

According to Election Supervisor Glenda Ferguson, a total of 639 early votes were cast in a span of five days last week.

Campmeeting is set for next week

Lumpkin Campground will hold its annual summer revival next week.

Known as campmeeting, the week-long event traditionally features two services each day that include prayer, singing, music, Bible readings, preaching, personal testimonies and altar calls.
