Lifelong educator, former college dean dies

A renowned Dawson County educator and former dean at Gainesville State College died Thursday morning following a period of declining health.

Herbert W. Robinson, 95, had been sick for several months, according to family and close friends.

Farmers offer fresh fare

Dawsonville resident Grace Collett has been selling her homegrown vegetables during the Dawson County Farmer's Market for nearly 10 years.

Tomatoes, squash, beans, cucumbers and eggplant were among the produce offered at her table July 11.

Arts council presents first adult musical

Opening this Friday, the Dawson County Arts Council is presenting its first adult musical, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."

Based on the popular 1988 film, the musical is a comedy revolving around playful banter, mischievous scams and sudden twists.

New women’s republican group forms

A new group has formed with a mission to get more women involved in the political process.

Based in Dawson County but pulling from all counties in the new 9th congressional district, the Foothills Republican Women is a grassroots organization that promotes an informed public through political education and activity by increasing the effectiveness of women in government.

Early voting under way

Advance voting for the July 31 general primary is currently under way and continues through July 27.

According to Election Supervisor Glenda Ferguson, a total of 639 early votes were cast in a span of five days last week.

Campmeeting is set for next week

Lumpkin Campground will hold its annual summer revival next week.

Known as campmeeting, the week-long event traditionally features two services each day that include prayer, singing, music, Bible readings, preaching, personal testimonies and altar calls.

Application proposal concerns residents

Nearly two dozen Dawson County residents were at a public meeting Monday to find out how a developer's wastewater proposal could affect their homes and families.

Waterscape Services is considering spreading stabilized sewage sludge from the Hampton Creek Water Reclamation Facility in Forsyth County onto property owned by Rotag Partners LLC at the northwest corner of Harry Sosebee and Lumpkin Campground roads in southern Dawson County.

Pool Room benefit Sunday

There's still time to get tickets to Sunday's benefit jam aimed at saving Dawsonville's historic Pool Room.

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the gate the day of the show. The price includes an afternoon of live music by a variety of local acts and free access to the kids' zone for children 12 and younger.

Storm snuffs show

The community will have a second chance to celebrate with fireworks this summer after torrential downpours washed out the Dawson Day Sparks in the Park festivities.

Plans are in the works for an event to make up for the canceled Independence Day fireworks extravaganza July 3.

Meeting planned over sewage from Forsyth

A public meeting next week in neighboring Forsyth County could draw some interest from those living near 65 acres in southeastern Dawson County where a developer wants to deposit sludge from a wastewater treatment plant.

Waterscape Utility LLC filed notice last month to hold the meeting at 10 a.m. July 16 in the Hampton Village Golf clubhouse, 6310 Hampton Golf Club Drive.

With bees swarming around her head in the hot morning air, Jean Schilling prods and picks at the growing hive.

Unfazed and unafraid, the local beekeeper is dressed from head to toe as she swings the smoking canister to calm the bees. It's all part of the routine to check her five hives.

Community mourns death of local historian

The Dawsonville community is mourning the death of a local historian, retired school teacher and beloved family man this week.

Lifelong resident Charles Finley passed away July 4 due to complications from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle wreck June 15. He was 64.

Chestatee artists show works

Bowen Center for the Arts is bursting with paintings, drawings, carvings and other independent creations reflecting the local landscape.

The Chestatee Artists, based in Lumpkin County, are presenting a collection that shows mixed mediums through the end of July.

Folk artists come home for reunion

Lannie and Gerald Lambert travel from Atlanta each June for the annual Folk Art Family Reunion at Around Back at Rocky's Place.

"We have friends that live in Bent Tree, so we're here visiting them, but we always come to the reunion," said Lannie Lambert, an art teacher that specializes in folk art and lessons.
