After a few years in college at the University of Virginia, Dawson County native Adam Kimbrell joined the Army. Within a few months, he found himself living in an abandoned hut in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

"We went to an area where the surge had been pushed to - a place where the Taliban had controlled for the last four years," the 25-year-old Army Infantryman said. "Our job was to go back in and take it all back over and separate the insurgents from the people, which we did. We did a real good job in doing that."

Service honors missing soldiers

A remembrance service will pay respect to soldiers who remain missing or were once prisoners of war.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 970 and the Dawson County High School JROTC invite the community to gather at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Veterans Memorial Park in honor of POW/MIA Recognition Day.

Officials searching for woman

Authorities are searching for a 54-year-old woman reported missing late Monday night in the area of Amicalola Falls State Park.

According to Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten, Lynn Bresee was reported missing about 11 p.m. Monday by a man with whom she had been camping.

Service focuses on 9/11

More than 800 miles separate Dawsonville and Manhattan, but that distance wasn't enough to stop the effects of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks from reaching the local community.

Several area residents were directly affected by the events of that tragic day nearly 10 years ago.

Crash under investigation

It could be weeks before the results of an investigation into Saturday's deadly boat crash on Lake Lanier are available.

Melissa Cummings, spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, said a team began reconstructing the collision Sunday.

Native boy excels at fishing event

A 13-year-old Dawson County native is making a name for himself as a Texas outdoorsman.

During the month of July, Carson Sims received his third straight Texas Slam Award and received $1,000 for weighing in a big fish in the 2011 WON Bass U.S. Open in Nevada.

Charity ride is Saturday

A charity motorcycle ride will be held at noon Saturday beginning on Harmony Church Road to raise funds for funeral costs associated with the loss of a child.

The event will be hosted by Charlie's Little Angels and the Wingmen Motorcycle Club.

Dateline to profile Hilton on Friday

An upcoming episode of NBC's Dateline will profile accused serial killer Gary Michael Hilton who admitted killing a young Gwinnett County woman in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management area in January 2008.

Fittingly named "Mystery on Blood Mountain," Friday night's Dateline episode that will air at 9 p.m. follows Hilton as he stalked his human prey along hiking trails and lonely roads from Florida to North Carolina.

Dawson man dies after jumping off lake bridge

Authorities say the death of a 22-year-old Dawsonville man last week is a sad and stark reminder not to jump from a Lake Lanier bridge.

"Any of that kind of behavior is of course careless and it in this case unfortunately proved fatal," said Forsyth County Fire Capt. Jason Shivers.
