Drop off unused medicines Saturday

Several local agencies have teamed up to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands.

Each day, nearly 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.

‘Bellezza’ exhibit features array of artistic talents

For the 11th year, Bowen Center for the Arts is featuring an assortment of works by the Sawnee Artists Association.

The Forsyth County-based association presents its member's artwork of various mediums, including woodwork, painting and photography, through Saturday.

Survivors honored for their fight

Cancer survivors and their caregivers gathered April 19 for the Relay for Life Survivor Dinner at Dawson County High School.

Paper bag luminaries at the center of guests' tables testified to the numerous people affected by cancer. "My professor," "my friend," "my mother" and "my son" were among the titles written on them.

‘Where it all started’

A movie that touches on the north Georgia gold rush and famed local miners is in the works, according to film and Dawsonville officials.

Jimmy Anderson, a historian for Dawson and Lumpkin counties, confirmed that local property is being considered for scenes about famed miner Green Russell.

Complex changes sought

The Dawsonville City Council is scheduled to discuss variance requests for a proposed apartment complex Thursday night.

Plans call for Farmington Woods to be built on 15 acres off Perimeter Road, less than a mile from downtown. It will feature 72 units, including one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

Moore named festival grand marshal

Championship car owner and NASCAR Hall of Famer Bud Moore will serve as grand marshal for the 45th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival in October.

"We're real honored to have him," said Gordon Pirkle, a local racing historian and board member of KARE for Kids, which organizes the festival.

Electronics recycling event planned

Keep Dawson County Beautiful's annual electronics recycling event is this weekend.

Volunteers will be in the Dawsonville Walmart parking lot from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday to help unload personal computers, printers, monitors, stereo equipment, radios, telephones, circuit boards and fax machines, among other items.
