New Year’s brings old traditions

For those wondering what to do with their Christmas tree after the holidays, Keep Dawson County Beautiful suggests going green this season.

Bring One for the Chipper, the annual recycling program, has collected and recycled more than 5 million Christmas trees statewide since 1991.

Volunteers: Donate locally

Volunteers at a local charity thrift store are concerned with the number of clothing donation bins popping up across the community.

"I counted at least 30 and they're all over the county," said Warren King, a volunteer at RIC Rack Thrift Store and Food Pantry.

Troopers collecting Toys for Tots

Georgia State Patrol Post 37-Cumming is accepting gifts for the Marines' annual Toys for Tots drive.

Troopers will be at the Dawsonville Walmart from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 22 collecting donations and offering free car safety seat checks. The child does not have to be present, but it would be helpful to insure proper fitting.

Nordson donates bikes to children for Christmas

Nordson Corporation donated 30 bikes last week that will be given to area children this holiday season.

The bikes were distributed during KARE for Kids' annual Christmas campaign.

Couple celebrates 60 years of marriage

It was 60 years today that Francis "Tim" Webb vowed to spend the rest of his life with his sweetheart.

"We had known each other, and we used to tease when she came into the drug store about what a good looking girl she was," he said. "I had to call her two or three times to get a first date."

Volunteers serve more than 300 meals

Volunteers served more than 300 meals at the second annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner last month at the Lakeview Center.

Organized by the Alliance of Churches of Dawson County, volunteers also delivered meals to several homebound seniors in the community Nov. 23.

The community is invited to the Dawson County Senior Center on Friday morning for a downhome country breakfast.

Director Margie Weaver said funds from the event will help provide Christmas presents for seniors who utilize the center throughout the year.
