Agents inspect distillery

Federal agents reportedly paid a surprise visit to downtown Dawsonville early Friday, ready to shut down what they had been told was an active moonshine operation.

Instead, the agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives left several hours later after determining the alleged tip was false.

Focus is the kids

Organizers say the 44th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival in downtown Dawsonville was a record breaker.

"I've never seen people start arriving on Wednesday for the festival," said Gordon Pirkle, a longtime member of KARE for Kids, which organizes the event.

Keep kids safe this Halloween

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office and Emergency Management Agency reminds parents to make sure children are safe this Halloween.

With Halloween on Monday, motorists should also anticipate finding trick-or-treaters on local roads and neighborhoods as early as 5 p.m.

Pill drop offers secure way to dispose of drugs

Local authorities want parents to remember the war on drugs starts at home.

Each day, nearly 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

Poker run benefits kids

Proceeds from a poker run this weekend will benefit the Dawson County Sheriff's annual Shop with a Cop event.

The run departs from the Dawson County Law Enforcement Center on Tucker Avenue beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. Breakfast will be available.

Moonshine Festival this weekend

Lee Elrod was at an estate sale three years ago when he stumbled across an early 1940s photo taken atop Amicalola Falls.

An antique collector of sorts, Elrod was intrigued by the image of a man warming his hands over the open flame of a copper liquor still.

Rotary team is ‘Smarter than a 10 year-old’

It's not technically a trick question, but tricky all the same to nearly everyone gathered Oct. 11 at Dawson County Middle School.

"Name all of the states that border the Great Lakes," said emcee Gary Pichon during the Reading Education Association of Dawson County's annual "Are You Smarter than a 10 Year-Old" competition.

Homans installed as Kiwanis president

Local attorney Joey Homans was installed last week as president of the Dawson County Kiwanis Club by the group's 2011 President Lisa Thurmond.

"There's a lot of opportunities to be involved in community activities in Dawson County. Kiwanis is the way I've been able to tap into the community," Homans said. "I hope to just continue along the path that Lisa Thurmond set and continue to be positive to grow and strengthen our club."

Festival traffic advisory

Thousands of visitors will be in Dawsonville this weekend for one of the most popular festivals in north Georgia.

The Mountain Moonshine Festival attracts thousands of people a day and parking all of the cars is quite a task. This year's festival will be Friday through Sunday.

Funding will help improve young lives

A local partnership recently learned it will receive more than $121,000 to help fund its efforts to improve the lives of young people.

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Office of Prevention Services has awarded Dawson County Family Connection a grant to focus on underage alcohol prevention.

Cable barrier project scheduled for Ga. 400

A cable barrier similar to one installed on Interstate 985 in Hall County several years ago will be placed in the median on Ga. 400 in Dawson and Lumpkin counties.

The Georgia Depart-ment of Transportation announced Oct. 3 that it approved the 5.1-mile project as part of $97 million in 10 new transportation infra-structure improvement and maintenance projects across the state.
