Dawson native to speak at historical society meeting

Local author Larry Pirkle will be speaking Tuesday at a Dawson County Historical and Genealogical Society meeting.

Pirkle recently published the book "Of the Seeds They've Sown," comprised of stories, anecdotes and commentary gathered during his life in Dawson County.

Locals looking for fresh seasonal produce need look no further than markets in Dawson County.

The Dawson County Extension Service's ninth annual market begins next week, running from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at 298 Academy Ave.

Fire displaces four families

An early morning fire at an apartment complex in Dawson County displaced four families and forced several people to jump from a second floor window to escape the blaze early Saturday.

Dkota Donaldson, 13, was at a friend's sleepover, having a late night snack, when the group of teens heard what they thought was someone on the roof.

Emergency workers urge fire safety this summer

A significant increase in fires over the last few weeks has prompted emergency personnel to encourage the community to be fire smart this summer.

According to Dawson County Emergency Services Deputy Chief Tim Satterfield, fires kill more people in the United States every year than all natural disasters combined.

Democratic Party chair to speak to Dawson group

Mike Berlon, the new chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party, will be the featured speaker at the next meeting of the Dawson County Democrats at 6 p.m. June 16 at the Dawson County Public Library.

Mike Berlon has been involved in Democratic politics for more than three decades. During his 30 years of political engagement, he has been a candidate for office, recruited and worked with candidates in both local and statewide campaigns, sponsored many fundraisers and promoted Democratic ideals.

Grace Café serves dinner

Beginning next week, Grace Café at Grace Presbyterian Church will be serving free meals from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. The program will continue throughout the summer.

The church has stopped its twice-weekly luncheon service.

Teen struck, killed on skateboard

A 16-year-old skateboarder died Monday night after he was struck by a vehicle on Hwy. 53 near Dawsonville.

Dawson County Emergency Services Director Billy Thurmond said Tyler Seay died at Atlanta Medical Center, where he was flown after suffering critical injuries in the collision.

Heat wave lingering

Dawson County residents flocked to the shade and took to the pool or lake last week as temperatures approached an unseasonal 100 degrees in northeast Georgia.
