According to the Georgia Lottery, Andrew Hunter won $250,000 after playing the Mega Millions with winnings from a tossed ticket.

Churches serve holiday meal

The local Alliance of Churches is expecting several hundred guests today for the annual community Thanksgiving feast at the Lakeview Center.

"We just know that in this economy that there's a lot of people that are struggling and trying to manage very tight budgets, who may not have the means to provide a nice Thanksgiving banquet type meal for their families because of money concerns," said Doug Powell, an alliance volunteer.

Toy run rumbles through town

Santa and nearly 450 of his elves roared into Dawsonville on Sunday during the annual Buck Jones Memorial Toy Run.

Jones, a former Cumming police chief who also worked for the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, started the toy drive after seeing a lack of charities helping families with presents at Christmas.

Florida woman is county’s fifth traffic death in 2011

A 72-year-old Naples, Fla., woman was killed Saturday morning in a two-vehicle wreck at Hwy. 53 and Elliott Family Parkway.

According to authorities, June Schuh died at the scene of the collision, which occurred about 11 a.m. Nov. 19.

Pheasant Shoot to raise funds for center elevator

Make plans now to attend the third annual Dawson County European Pheasant Shoot.

The event will be held on Dec. 3, at the Whitmire property at Goldmine and Nugget Ridge roads. Cost of participation is $275 and includes breakfast and Varsity catered lunch.

War Hill boat ramp one of only two open

While lake levels are down, boating and fishing out of War Hill Park continue to thrive.

The launch ramp extension, completed in 2009 by Dawson County Public Works and Facilities, is one of only two ramps open on the north end of the lake.

Ladies of Gold Creek, RIC Rack win best tables

RIC Rack volunteers and a group of women from the Gold Creek community shared the spotlight earlier this month as winners of the Bowen Center for the Arts' annual Lunch at an Artful Table event.

Now in its fifth year, the Nov. 5 luncheon featured creatively decorated tables and a full course meal.

Governor to speak to Republican Party

Gov. Nathan Deal will be the guest speaker Tuesday night at the Dawson County Republican Party's monthly meeting.

Co-sponsored by the Dawson County Tea Party, as well as the Republican parties from Forsyth and Lumpkin counties, the meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m. at the Lakeview Center on Dawson Forest Road.

Held on the 11th day of the 11th month in the 11th year, the seventh annual Veterans Day celebration began with a formal ceremony at Dawson County Middle School, followed by a parade.

Medals’ owner sought

A Purple Heart and Bronze Star are among a box of Vietnam War memorabilia a cleaning crew found earlier this month in a foreclosed home.

The medals were issued to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Angel Perfirio Saez-Ramirez, who was killed in action while defending his platoon during an ambush in 1967.

Shoal Creek reservoir makes ‘Dirty Dozen’ list

A statewide environmental group considers a proposed reservoir in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area one of the 12 biggest threats to Georgia's waterways.

In its inaugural "Dirty Dozen," the Georgia Water Coalition listed the proposed 2,000-acre Shoal Creek reservoir with the Glades Reservoir in neighboring Hall County at fifth on the list.

Ceremony on Friday pays tribute to veterans

Veterans of all ages and each military branch will be honored Friday during Dawsonville's seventh annual Veterans Day celebration.

Formal ceremonies will be held at 2:45 p.m. Nov. 11 in the gym at the Dawson County Middle School, followed by a parade through downtown Dawsonville that begins at 4 p.m.
