Governor to speak to Republican Party

Gov. Nathan Deal will be the guest speaker Tuesday night at the Dawson County Republican Party's monthly meeting.

Co-sponsored by the Dawson County Tea Party, as well as the Republican parties from Forsyth and Lumpkin counties, the meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m. at the Lakeview Center on Dawson Forest Road.

Veterans honored

A crowd of hundreds lined the streets of downtown Dawsonville on Friday afternoon to pay tribute to veterans of all ages.

Held on the 11th day of the 11th month in the 11th year, the seventh annual Veterans Day celebration began with a formal ceremony at Dawson County Middle School, followed by a parade.

Medals’ owner sought

A Purple Heart and Bronze Star are among a box of Vietnam War memorabilia a cleaning crew found earlier this month in a foreclosed home.

The medals were issued to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Angel Perfirio Saez-Ramirez, who was killed in action while defending his platoon during an ambush in 1967.

Shoal Creek reservoir makes ‘Dirty Dozen’ list

A statewide environmental group considers a proposed reservoir in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area one of the 12 biggest threats to Georgia's waterways.

In its inaugural "Dirty Dozen," the Georgia Water Coalition listed the proposed 2,000-acre Shoal Creek reservoir with the Glades Reservoir in neighboring Hall County at fifth on the list.

Ceremony on Friday pays tribute to veterans

Veterans of all ages and each military branch will be honored Friday during Dawsonville's seventh annual Veterans Day celebration.

Formal ceremonies will be held at 2:45 p.m. Nov. 11 in the gym at the Dawson County Middle School, followed by a parade through downtown Dawsonville that begins at 4 p.m.

Annie Jr. this weekend at Riverview Middle School

The Dawson County Arts Council's will present four productions of Annie Jr. this week.

The family friendly show for audiences of all ages is a take on the classic musical presented by young performers from the north Georgia area, including Dawson County.

Change your clocks, batteries

Dawson County Emergency Services urges residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarm when they change their clocks as daylight savings time ends Sunday.

"Having a working smoke alarm reduces your chances of dying in a fire by nearly half," Dawson County Emergency Services Deputy Chief Tim Satterfield said. "Batteries in smoke alarms should be replaced twice a year. Change your clocks, change your batteries."

Free health fair is Saturday at church

Dozens of healthcare professionals will offer free health screenings Saturday at Cornerstone Christian Church in Dawsonville.

Free health screenings will be available to everyone beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at 236 Etowah River Road.

Christmas Eve will mark the beginning of Col. James "Lindy" Linder's 30th year in the United States Air Force.

"It has shaped who I am as a person. I have greatly appreciated my opportunities as I have served. From being an instructor and then evaluator, from a commander to a director, all the positions have been fascinating challenges," he said. "I have worked for all types of leaders and have learned from them all. My assignments have been all over the world, have pushed me outside of my comfort zone, and taught me an incredible amount."

Dispose of scrap tires this weekend

Each year, hundreds of scrap tires are illegally dumped along roadways, creating threats to the environment, public health and safety.

In an effort to decrease the number of scrap tires in the area, Keep Dawson County Beautiful offers Dawson County residents a scrap tire amnesty day from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Dawson County Transfer Station.

Driver injured in tractor trailer wreck

A tractor-trailer driver escaped serious injury Oct. 26 when his vehicle careened down an embankment on Hwy. 52, just east of Amicalola Falls State Park.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Sherman Edward Corn of Cleveland, was able to crawl out of the truck and up to the road, emergency workers said.

Appeal filed in dispute

Dawsonville officials say they are not fazed that the battle over construction of a motorsports park in western Dawson County has shifted to the Georgia Supreme Court.

"We're sticking to our guns," Mayor Joe Lane Cox said of the appeal filed Oct. 26. "Judge [John] Girardeau ruled in our favor before and I think that will happen with this one, too."
