Peter Pan swoops into Bowen Center for the Arts

Known as the boy who never wants to grow up, Peter Pan inspired Bowen Center for the Arts' annual children's event "Sail Away to Neverland" last Saturday.

Children's imaginations were at work and eyes were aglow at the hanging decorations, colorful set designs and playful accessories based on the 2011 edition of the illustrated Walt Disney "Peter Pan" book.

Home destroyed

David Nalley stared in disbelief Tuesday afternoon as firefighters battled a blaze that destroyed his home on Goshen Church Road in northwestern Dawson County.

"I'm still in shock. I guess it really hasn't hit me yet," he said. "It's everything I have, everything I've worked for."

Home, garden expo this weekend

Live demonstrations, do-it-yourself workshops and innovative products are just a sample of what will be showcased this weekend at the North Georgia Home and Garden Expo.

The expo will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday at the Lakeview Center, 2057 Dawson Forest Road.

GOP to hold mass meetings

The Dawson County Republican Party will convene Precinct Mass Meetings to elect delegates and alternate delegates to the Dawson County Republican Party Convention Saturday morning.

Precinct meetings begin at 9 a.m. and will be followed by the county convention at 10 a.m. to elect delegates for the district and state convention.

Expo highlights local nonprofits

Several nonprofit organizations showcased their group's work and volunteer needs Saturday at the Dawson County Library.

The expo was held following the Dawson County Homeowners Civic Association's annual membership meeting and was free to the public.

Coroner confirms paw that of a bear

Authorities have determined that skeletal remains discovered Sunday afternoon in eastern Dawson County are those of a bear.

Dawson County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home on Hwy. 53 about 2 p.m. after reports that the family's dog had found what appeared to be a human hand.

County will raise elevator

After numerous fundraising efforts collected nearly $43,000, county commissioners voted last week to cover the remaining balance to install an elevator at the Dawson County Senior Center.

"The seniors are going to be so happy. I'm so happy for them," said Margie Weaver, center director.

Rolling the dice against cancer

Each member on the Dawson County High School Relay for Life team has a personal reason for supporting the American Cancer Society's signature fundraising effort.

"We have so many staff members that have been affected by cancer either directly or indirectly that we all realize that we are in it for the same reason - so no one else has to experience what we have lived," said Beth Swafford, team leader.

Arbor Day celebrates honorees

A new state champion tree, submitted by Mark Short, was recognized on Arbor Day by the Dawson County Tree Preservation committee.

The Chestnut Oak measured 164 inches in circumference and was 96 feet tall, according to Tony Page of the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Racing hall of fame to show Daytona 500

For the price of museum admission, race fans can spend Sunday at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and watch the 54th running of the Daytona 500 on the museum's big screen.

"We had a Daytona 500 party several years ago and it went off pretty good," said Gordon Pirkle, local racing historian and hall president.
