Grand re-opening is scheduled for museum

The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame has an event planned for Saturday that will celebrate recent additions to the museum as well as recognize the non-profit organization that now runs it.

Gordon Pirkle, president of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, said the "grand re-opening" will have car shows, autograph signings and "lots of good food."

Fire chars Hwy. 53 home

Dawson County fire officials are investigating a blaze that destroyed a Hwy. 53 home early Tuesday and displaced a family of four.

Tim Satterfield, deputy chief of emergency services, said no one was injured in the fire, which occurred sometime after midnight at 5364 Hwy. 53 East, but the home was a complete loss.

"We went into the evening a couple thousand dollars above our $60,000 goal," said Jay Walker, campaign chairman. "Early on, we said we'd be ecstatic if we hit $70,000."

Dawsonville man lives ‘pipe’ dream

Dewitt Wannamaker doesn't remember if he was joking several years ago when he told his wife he wanted a set of bagpipes for his birthday.

Today, at the age of 68, the Dawsonville man says he couldn't have asked for a more perfect gift.

Program offers support to local teen parents

A rise in teen pregnancy rates and the absence of local programs for preschool children led volunteers to form a new support group for teen parents.

"We know of at least two teen moms who are going to Cumming each week to a group for teen moms," said Nancy Stites of Family Connection, a partner agency with Growing Bright Stars, which focuses on kindergarten readiness.
