‘Bellezza’ exhibit features array of artistic talents

For the 11th year, Bowen Center for the Arts is featuring an assortment of works by the Sawnee Artists Association.

The Forsyth County-based association presents its member's artwork of various mediums, including woodwork, painting and photography, through Saturday.

Survivors honored for their fight

Cancer survivors and their caregivers gathered April 19 for the Relay for Life Survivor Dinner at Dawson County High School.

Paper bag luminaries at the center of guests' tables testified to the numerous people affected by cancer. "My professor," "my friend," "my mother" and "my son" were among the titles written on them.

‘Where it all started’

A movie that touches on the north Georgia gold rush and famed local miners is in the works, according to film and Dawsonville officials.

Jimmy Anderson, a historian for Dawson and Lumpkin counties, confirmed that local property is being considered for scenes about famed miner Green Russell.

Complex changes sought

The Dawsonville City Council is scheduled to discuss variance requests for a proposed apartment complex Thursday night.

Plans call for Farmington Woods to be built on 15 acres off Perimeter Road, less than a mile from downtown. It will feature 72 units, including one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

Moore named festival grand marshal

Championship car owner and NASCAR Hall of Famer Bud Moore will serve as grand marshal for the 45th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival in October.

"We're real honored to have him," said Gordon Pirkle, a local racing historian and board member of KARE for Kids, which organizes the festival.

Electronics recycling event planned

Keep Dawson County Beautiful's annual electronics recycling event is this weekend.

Volunteers will be in the Dawsonville Walmart parking lot from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday to help unload personal computers, printers, monitors, stereo equipment, radios, telephones, circuit boards and fax machines, among other items.

Teams ‘Paint the Town Purple’

Volunteers painted the town purple Saturday with numerous events that raised cancer awareness and funds for Dawson County Relay for Life.

From car washes, yard sales and motorcycle rides to lemonade stands and cookouts, Relay for Life teams collected hundreds and helped spread the word about the fight against cancer.

Cow county’s first rabies case in ’12

Animal owners are encouraged to have their pets and livestock vaccinated after a cow in northeastern Dawson was confirmed last week as the county's first rabies case in 2012.

Local animal control officials received verification April 9 that a cow found near Stowers Road and Ga. 400 was infected with the virus.

Center planned for visits

A supervised visitation center planned for Dawson County aims to address domestic and dating violence that can occur during child custody exchanges.

The project began in October when the Office on Violence Against Women awarded "The Safe Havens: Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange Grant" to the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council in Atlanta.

Local animal control officials announced Tuesday morning that they have received confirmation of a rabies case in Dawson County.

Elderly man dies in wreck

An 89-year-old Dawsonville man died Monday afternoon from injuries he suffered in a wreck earlier that day.

Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Robin Stone said Heinz Boehm failed to yield as he pulled his 1990 Nissan Axxess onto Hwy. 9 north from a private driveway near Apple Ridge 2.

Booths available for weekend yard sale

Egg hunt raises funds

With the sun beating down on their shoulders, hundreds of children stormed the field to claim bright-colored eggs during the 26th annual Community Easter Egg Hunt.

Earlier on Saturday, KARE for Kids' volunteers had spread more than 20,000 hard plastic eggs across the fields at Veterans Memorial Park.

County to dedicate time capsule

The community is invited to a ceremony Thursday to dedicate a 30-year time capsule that will be buried at the new Dawson County Government Center.

The time capsule will be placed in a flower bed in front of the building and identified with a granite marker that will list the installation date as well as the year it is to be opened.

The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce honored late Dawsonville Mayor Joe Lane Cox on Monday night by presenting a proclamation to his family and the city council.
