Funding will help improve young lives

A local partnership recently learned it will receive more than $121,000 to help fund its efforts to improve the lives of young people.

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Office of Prevention Services has awarded Dawson County Family Connection a grant to focus on underage alcohol prevention.

Cable barrier project scheduled for Ga. 400

A cable barrier similar to one installed on Interstate 985 in Hall County several years ago will be placed in the median on Ga. 400 in Dawson and Lumpkin counties.

The Georgia Depart-ment of Transportation announced Oct. 3 that it approved the 5.1-mile project as part of $97 million in 10 new transportation infra-structure improvement and maintenance projects across the state.

Essig to speak to democrats

Alan Essig, director of the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute will be the guest speaker at the Dawson County Democratic Party's October meeting.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Dawson County Library. The public is invited.

Miss KARE for Kids crowned this weekend

The 2011 Miss KARE for Kids will be crowned Saturday at Riverview Middle School.

Now in its third year, the pageant is one of several fundraisers for KARE for Kids, a local non-profit organization that provides Christmas presents to Dawson County children in need.

"With the way the economy is, it's hard to make a living without a piece of paper from a university," he said. "I wanted to go to college, but I wasn't sure how it was going to get paid for."

Man charged with DUI after motorcycle wreck

A Dawson County man who is recovering after a motorcycle collision Friday has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Larry Mann, 39, of Montvale Road was flown to Atlanta Medical Center with serious injuries from the crash that occurred about noon Sept. 30.

Supporters raise nearly $18,000 for United Way

Two weeks ago United Way for Dawson County set its 2012 fundraising target at $105,000.

By Saturday evening, supporters had already collected nearly $18,000 toward the goal during a barbecue and hole-in-one challenge at the home of Jim and Barbara Watson just outside Dawsonville.

Election registration deadline is Tuesday

Residents living in the city of Dawsonville have until Tuesday to register if they plan to vote in the Nov. 8 municipal election.

Registration is available at the Dawson County Elections and Voter Registration Office, located at the intersection of Academy Avenue and Maple Street in downtown Dawsonville.

Annual competition aids literacy program

For the last two years, members of the Dawson County Woman's Club proved they are indeed smarter than a 10-year-old.

On Tuesday, teams will have the chance to see if they also are during the annual Are you Smarter than a 10-Year-Old competition. The event benefits Reading Education Association of Dawson County, or READ, a local, literacy group that aims to improve young lives through education.

Marker recognizes local Union soldiers

Growing up in Dawson County, Ben Fouts remembers stories of his two grandfathers. One fought for the Confederacy and another in the Union Army.

"The one that fought for the Union army left northern Dawson County and walked to Tennessee to join the Union army up there," Fouts said. "Then he walked back after the war."

Southern supper aids elevator fund

There's no need to cook next Friday night.

Instead, stop by the Dawson County Senior Center on Oct. 14 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. for a southern supper of smoked ham, pinto beans with cornbread and onions, slaw, iced tea and homemade fried fruit pies - all for just $5 a plate.

Gas line ruptured near Ingles store

Stores in the Ingles shopping center on Ga. 400 were evacuated for nearly two hours Monday after a crew attempting to fix a water leak ruptured a gas main.

The three-man crew was working with a small backhoe when the break occurred about 4 p.m.
