Rex White will serve as Grand Marshal of festival

Rex White, former NASCAR champion and member of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, will serve as grand marshal for the 44th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival this October.

White won the 1960 Winston Cup, and is NASCAR's oldest living champion.

Travel Channel films episode in Dawson

A film crew from the Travel Channel was in Dawsonville last week, filming for an episode of America's Wildest Roads to air in November.

The crew, assisted by several community members, filmed a staged car chase between one of the first Georgia State Patrol Cars, a 1937 Ford, and two former 'shine hauling cars, a 1939 Ford and a 1948 Ford.

Fathers, sons display art

The Dawson County Arts Council held an opening reception July 9 at the Bowen Center for the Arts for its current Father's & Son's exhibit.

The exhibit, which will run through the end of the month, features artwork created by the father-and-son teams of James Daniel Sr. and Jr. and Doug and Tyler King.

Canoe race to benefit center elevator fund

Proceeds from a canoe and kayak race on the Etowah River Aug. 6 will help fund an elevator at the Dawson County Senior Center.

"We're so grateful to have this. The seniors really need an elevator," said Margie Weaver, center director. "We're so close and this will be a really big help to us."

Changes coming to Kilough Church Rd.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the Kilough Church Road-Ga. 400 crossing next week while the intersection is rerouted.

State Department of Transportation crews will be installing concrete medians and signs similar to those found at Beartooth Parkway and Ga. 400.

Safety first when dipping in Lanier

The southern half of Lake Lanier appears laden with the most fatalities over the past six years, including five the past couple of weeks.

But then, so are most of the parks - some nearly side by side - that are run by area governments and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Workers honored for cardiac care

More than a dozen emergency workers were recognized last week for making a difference in the lives of Dawson County residents in life threatening medical distress.

Each of the individuals honored at last week's county commission meeting "contributed to save a cardiac patient," said Dawson County Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford.

Dawsonville recognized again as regional site

For the fifth consecutive year, Dawsonville has been recognized by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs as a 2011 Veterans Day Regional Site.

"It's not an easy task," said Pam Hamalainen, president of the Veterans Affairs Committee of Dawson County. "We're proud to have been chosen as one of two sites in Georgia. It shows that we're right up there with the big dogs."

Boy who died after wreck in lake ID’d

Authorities continue to investigate the death of a 10-year-old northern Virginia boy, who was killed last week when he was struck by a personal watercraft on Lake Lanier.

Conor Tierney died July 3 from head and body injuries suffered in the collision, according to Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden.

Boy killed in personal watercraft collision ID'd

The 10-year-old boy who died Wednesday evening after being hit by a personal watercraft on Lake Lanier has been identified as Conor Tierney of McLean, Va.

The Department of Natural Resources Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident that happened about 2:45 p.m. on the Chestatee River arm of Lake Lanier in Dawson County, DNR spokesman Rick Lavender said Thursday afternoon.

A Dawsonville man was among the 19 people killed in wrecks statewide over the July Fourth holiday weekend.

Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden said Michael Martinez Moreno, 27, was pronounced dead Saturday night at Northside Hospital-Forsyth.
