Moon Shine run is Saturday

Gov. Nathan Deal will deliver the keynote address during the 9th Congressional District banquet Friday night at the Lakeview Center in Dawsonville. Church to screen film about crime on children

First Baptist Church of Dawsonville will be screening the new film "Finding Faith" Saturday with hopes that parents will take a new look at the dangers of Internet crimes against children. "As grandparents, it's a grave concern of ours," said Debbie Gaines, whose husband Jim pastors the church. "We were interested in alerting the community on this important message for teens and their parents."

Dance supports literacy

A fundraiser Saturday night had couples twisting the night away for literacy. The annual golden oldies trivia dinner dance collected more than $5,000 for Reading Education Association of Dawson County's mission to improve lives through literacy in the community.

Elliott gets first top-five truck finish

Dawsonville's Chase Elliott carded his first Camping World Truck Series top-five finish Sunday at Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina. The fifth-place finish follows his sixth-place run at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, where the 17-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver made his national racing debut a week earlier.

DCSO offers women’s self-defense course

A free course designed to teach women basic self-defense tips will be taught at Robinson Elementary School. Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Ray Goodie said the three-hour course, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon April 20, will give women hands-on experience to fight off attackers.

A month after Dawsonville Mayor James Grogan announced the city had interest in developing a regional reservoir with Georgia Reservoir Co., a Lumpkin County resident floated what she contends is a better plan. Local woman charged with embezzlement

A Dawsonville woman has been charged in connection with the alleged embezzlement of more than $27,000 from a Gainesville business. According to authorities, Amanda Kaye Phillips, 31, reportedly stole 52 blank checks from Bulldawg Collision, where she had worked for nearly a decade.
