Tree recycling effort under way

Keep Dawson County Beautiful volunteers are asking the community to go green this holiday season by recycling real Christmas trees that will be chipped into mulch. Bring One for the Chipper, the annual recycling program, has collected and recycled more than 5.9 million Christmas trees statewide since 1991.

Campbell named county manager

A Dawson County native has been selected as the county's next chief operating officer. Cindy Gilleland Campbell was named county manager Thursday night following a unanimous vote by the Dawson County commission.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office recognized its tops employees last week during the department's annual Christmas celebration at Peach Brandy Cottage. Sheriff Billy Carlisle said the men and women selected as employees of the year for their divisions went above and beyond during 2012.

Incoming officials take oaths of office

Incoming elected officials were sworn into office Dec. 20 at the Dawson County Government Center. Probate Judge Jennifer Burt administered the oaths of office, while Superior Court Judge Andrew Fuller governed the loyalty oath for the group.

County to dedicate senior center elevator

A ceremony Thursday afternoon will celebrate a years-long project to have an elevator at the Dawson County Senior Center. The center's new elevator was approved for use after its final inspection last Wednesday.

Members of Dawson County's state legislative delegation held a joint town hall meeting last week to highlight their goals for the 2013 legislative session. Commissioners are expected on Thursday to name Dawson County's next manager from a panel of internal candidates. The agenda is set for the Dawson County Board of Commissioners to discuss the finalists for the position in closed session during Thursday night's meeting.

‘Magical’ experience

The reason for the season was showcased Friday and Saturday night as the congregation at Bethel Baptist Church presented an elaborate, full-scale production depicting the story of Christ. Kelly Crane and her 6-year-old son Hayden were among the first in line Friday night for the hayride through about 40 acres behind the church, where the 13-scene production was staged.

Woman hurt in wreck dies

A Dawsonville woman hospitalized last month after a head-on collision on Hwy. 53 near the Dawson-Forsyth County line has died. Funeral services for Fredina Marie Elrod were held Sunday in the chapel of Bearden Funeral Home.

Council approves new structure
