Several promoted at sheriff’s office

Dawson County Sheriff Billy Carlisle recently promoted three officers to new leadership positions in the agency's uniform patrol and criminal investigation divisions. The promotions of Maj. Tony Wooten, Capt. Ray Goodie and Lt. Dan Ramsey took effect last month. They are an extension of Carlisle's two-year plan to streamline departmental operations and better provide top-notch police services to the community.

Police academy seeks participants

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for its annual Citizens Law Enforcement Academy. Designed to give residents an inside look at how local law enforcement operates, the free, four-week course begins March 7 with an introduction by Sheriff Billy Carlisle and his administrative staff.

Interest along Ga. 400 spikes

Interest along the busy Ga. 400 corridor continues to spike after several years of sluggishness, officials say. David McKee, Dawson County's planning director, said his office has seen building permits and business license applications surge by about 40 percent from a year ago.

Doughnut franchise opening this summer

A nationally known doughnut chain has submitted plans to build a location off Ga. 400. The Development Authority of Dawson County last week announced Dunkin' Donuts has submitted plans for the construction of a standalone building, north of the outlet mall.

Local man dies in prison

A defendant in a high profile Dawson County government theft case was found dead Saturday at the minimum security prison south of Atlanta where he was serving his sentence. Funeral services for Justin Curtis Disharoon, 25, were held Monday at Bethel Baptist Church in Dawsonville.

Gala honors members

In a year when change topped the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce's agenda, the move to a new facility for the group's 22nd annual award's ceremony and gala brought a fun, festive and memorable experience Friday night. Held at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, the event marks the chamber's accomplishments of 2012 and honors many in the community for their contributions. It's also one of the organization's largest fundraisers.

Advocate leads state board for second year

Local advocate Katie Strayhorn was recently re-elected to serve as chair of the state's Sex Offender Review Board for the second year. In her first year chairing the panel, Strayhorn focused on several initiatives. She also worked closely with newly-elected state Rep. Kevin Tanner to propose legislation that would allow the board to review parole notes in assessing sex offenders.

No charges in shooting

Charges will not be filed in what authorities have ruled an accidental shooting last week at Dawsonville Gun and Pawn on Hwy. 53 near Ga. 400. "It was an accident," said Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Ray Goodie.

Hendrick Motorsports announced last week that Dawsonville's Chase Elliott will run nine races in the NASCAR's World Truck Series this year. Driving the No. 94 Aaron's Chevrolet, the son of NASCAR champion Bill Elliott said he's honored to have Aaron's support as he takes steps in his promising racing career.

The Rotary Club of Dawson County's annual Super Bowl Squares contest gives players the chance to win between $500 and $2,000 in raffles that are held at the end of each quarter and then at the end of the game.

Tax, tag office closes for training

The Dawson County Tax Commissioner's office will close early today for state mandated staff training. The office will close at 11:30 a.m. and reopen for business at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
