Pool Room benefit Sunday

POSTED: July 11, 2012 4:00 a.m.

There's still time to get tickets to Sunday's benefit jam aimed at saving Dawsonville's historic Pool Room.

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the gate the day of the show. The price includes an afternoon of live music by a variety of local acts and free access to the kids' zone for children 12 and younger.

Featured performers include Dell Conner, Little Mountain, Brian Jarrett, Kevin Woody, Jody Abernathy and Mark Mundy, Meg Serrano, Random Fire and Alyssa Thurmond.

There will also be inflatables and face painting for the kids, vendors, raffles and a silent auction, as well as Checkered Flag Catering on-site to fire up the grill for dinner. Gates open at 2 p.m. with live music and festivities beginning at 3 p.m. on the football field at Veterans Memorial Park.

State revenue agents closed the downtown eatery in May for delinquent taxes. Since then, owner Gordon Pirkle has worked with the state to establish a payment schedule and plans to reopen in the coming months.

The benefit concert is intended to help him reach the goal.

Grandson Jordan Reece encourages the community to support the cause.

"Even though Papa does have the keys back, we are a long ways off from saving the Pool Room," he said. "All of the money, time and effort going in to the events and the accounts are going straight to [Pirkle] to help him rebuild his life."

The restaurant pays homage to native son and NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, with news clippings lining the walls.

A car show and beauty pageant are also planned this summer to benefit the Pool Room.

"Remember it's not Gordon's Pool Room. It's our Pool Room. It's the Dawsonville Pool Room. It's our history," Reece said.

Pirkle said he has been astonished by the calls, words of encouragement and support he's received.

"It's just overwhelming," he said.

Accounts have also been set up at United Community Bank and First Citizens Bank of Georgia to "Save the Pool Room."
