The community will have a second chance to celebrate with fireworks this summer after torrential downpours washed out the Dawson Day Sparks in the Park festivities.

Plans are in the works for an event to make up for the canceled Independence Day fireworks extravaganza July 3.

Park officials hope to have a special gathering later this summer that could include fireworks and a festival-like atmosphere.

Director Lisa Henson said Labor Day weekend is a possibility.

"They are holding the date for us," she said.

Details will be made available as soon as they are confirmed, she said.

Still, while the rain washed out the fireworks show, there was plenty of fun going on before dark at the park.

Now in its fourth year, Dawson Day Sparks in the Park was presented by the Dawson Community News and the Dawson County Board of Commissioners.

As in past years, the children's play area that included inflatables and a rock climbing wall was a hit, as was the local celebrity dunk tank.

The event also gave voters an opportunity to meet political candidates seeking local office.
