Tigers impress at event

POSTED: June 19, 2012 5:08 p.m.

The Dawson County football team started off summer workouts with an impressive showing.

Under head coach Jeff Lee, the team competed in a seven-on-seven passing camp at McEachern High School.

The team came away with a 3-2 record against some pretty stiff competition.

The event was sponsored by Under Armour and participation was by invitation only.

"We lost to eventual champion McEachern on the last play," Lee said. "We played bigger schools than us, but I thought we did very well."

Lee was also excited about how his players did against some very good football teams.

"Our guys beat Duluth, Griffin and Locust Grove. All these schools are a lot bigger than we are. The only other loss was to Hiram," he said.

Workouts are key to the Dawson County football program's success next season, according to Lee.

The team boasts quarterback Tyler Dominy and his favorite target, wide receiver Bruce Clark.

The Tigers are also much improved on defense with standout Cody Smith having a good camp, according to Lee.

"We are so much better on defense," he said.

Dominy has already had a busy summer. He has attended camps at Duke, North Carolina State, Cincinnati and Tennessee.

Dominy completed 59 passes in 101 attempts during the camp. He threw for 20 touchdowns and 961 yards.

Leading scorers for the camp were Clark with 7 touchdowns and Chris Sayler with 6 touchdowns.

"It is a great stepping stone for us competing at this event," Lee said. "We still have lots of work to do this summer, but it was a great start for us."

The team will continue conditioning and weight training throughout the summer.

Later this month the Tigers will travel to Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. for another passing camp.

The offensive linemen have already attended camp in South Georgia to improve on their footwork and blocking skills.
