American Legion Post 247 baseball is off to a great start with a 4-2 record after one week of play.

Under Coach Kasey Wilson, the team has gained wins over Canton, Peachtree City and Cumming.

Their two losses have been close games to Canton and Cumming.

“Both of those losses we should have won,” Wilson said.

Pitchers Jeffery Partington, Blake Thomas and Sawyer Thompson have led the way so far on the mound. Thompson, who played at Gilmer High School, pitched a complete game against Peachtree City.

On offense, Clay McClure is batting .400, including a homerun in the win against Canton.

Edward Willemse, who has committed to playing college baseball at Southern Union Community College, is also hitting the ball well.

He is currently batting .400 for the Dawsonville team.

Shortstop Austin White is also hot at the plate with a .350 batting average.

The team lost a close decision Saturday to Cumming, giving up four runs in the 4th inning and had a difficult time bouncing back.

Dawson County High School’s Partington hit a towering 2-run homer that was still going up after it cleared the trees beyond the outfield.

The team will be back at home on Friday against a very tough Loganville team. Loganville just won the high school class AAAA state championship.

First pitch will be at 6:30 p.m. at Dawson County High School.

“If we come ready to play we can play with anyone in the state. We are very deep in pitching, and have a real chance of winning the North division for the first time,” Wilson said.
