A crowd gathered in the Dawson County High School Media Center on Friday to applaud senior Stanton Rogers as he signed with LaGrange College's men's soccer team.

Rogers was only the third graduate this year to receive an athletic scholarship.

"I want to thank God for giving me the athletic ability ... my friends for always being there for me and my family for all the support. I am excited," Rogers said.

Acting as a defender on the field, Rogers was one of only four seniors on the team. Last month the team ended its season with a record 10-8 finish during the state playoffs.

His mother, Renee Rogers, who sat beside him during the signing, thanked the gathered crowd for their support.

"He's my birth son, but so many of you have had an impact on his life. You have loved him ... and I just want to say thank you," she said.

Head coach Jed Lacey said Rogers should be an example for players returning next season.

"This is what happens with hard work in and out of the classroom. Good job, Stan," Lacey said.

On May 20, Rogers was one of three boys' players to compete in the DiVarsity state all-star game at Marist High School.
