The remaining vacancy on the Dawsonville City Council was filled Thursday as Angie Smith took office.

A lifelong Dawsonville resident, the 36-year-old Smith takes the place of Calvin Byrd, who has resigned to run for mayor.

Smith and other new appointee Caleb Phillips, 25, will serve until a special election can be held in September.

Phillips was appointed to James Grogan's former post on May 7. Grogan still serves as acting mayor and is seeking the post full time in the July 31 election.

During Thursday's called meeting, City Attorney Dana Miles recommended the council approve qualifying for a special election for the council posts Aug. 15-17 and the voting date of Sept. 18.

The council will consider the recommendation and make a decision at its next meeting, which is set for 5 p.m. June 4.

Appointees Smith and Phillips both said they would not seek the posts permanently.

Smith, a 1998 graduate of North Georgia College & State University, currently serves as a partner in her family's commercial and residential real estate leasing firm in downtown Dawsonville.

Her family goes back four generations in Dawsonville and she also serves as the minister of music at Kilough, Church by the Lake.

Smith is enthusiastic for her municipal role.

"This is nothing like anything I've ever done before and since I'm very interested in the well-being of the city it seemed like a temporarily good fit," she said.

Byrd recommended Smith for the seat at the May 7 meeting. He said she was "active in the community and qualified."
