The Dawson County High School Tigers' football team had its annual spring scrimmage game Saturday at Tiger Stadium. The game was a culmination of 10 days of spring practice.

It was a festive occasion as a big crowd watched next year's edition of the varsity team. Earlier in the day a car show was held at the school. There was also plenty of barbecue for those that were hungry.

"It was a beautiful day for football," said head coach Jeff Lee. "We had a good crowd and a lot of support during our car show. I thought our booster club did a great job."

Under steamy weather conditions the Tigers had a full contact game. Lee and his staff divided the players into maroon and gold teams.

"The weather did seem to wear on us as the scrimmage went along. Overall, I was pleased with our conditioning," Lee said.

The Tigers seemed to be bigger, quicker and stronger than in past seasons.

"Our guys have gotten stronger," Lee said. "They have put a lot of work in during the offseason in the weight room and with agilities. We still have a way to go."

The maroon team featured quarterback Tyler Dominy.

Dominy looked sharp throwing the ball and with his decision making.

"Tyler [Dominy] looked sharp. There are still some things he can improve, but I look for him to have a big year," Lee said.

"I thought the scrimmage game went well. We saw some things that we need to work on both on offense and defense. There are not major things, just some tweaking here and there. Once again, I was pleased with the effort from our players," he said.

Defensively, both teams looked good.

"I thought the defense under new defensive coordinator Jed Lacey has adjusted to some of the new schemes that he has installed and looked good even though the units were divided," Lee said.

Several players stood out to Lee.

He said he liked the play of Brandon Tenorio, Cody Smith, Mitchell Putnam, Zach Martin, Keaton Toal, Harley Vaughan, Blake McDaniel and Eli Brown especially.

"This senior and junior class has played a lot of football during their career, so we are expecting a special season," Lee said. "The biggest note is that it seems from the booster club to the players that everyone is all in."

Lee is hoping that this could be a big year for the Tigers.
