Local earns national honors on rifle team

Dawsonville native Mattie Brogdon, a senior on the Texas Christian University rifle team, garnered national attention when she received All-American honors in March.

The young markswoman was named to the 2012 National Rifle Association's All-Americans Smallbore Second Team and received an Air Rifle Honorable Mention.

The honors followed the NCAA 2012 Rifle Championship, hosted by Ohio State University in Columbus. The championship had given Brogdon the opportunity to compete in smallbore and air rifle relays.

According to the NCAA Web site, the university's team, the Horned Frogs, got the championship "started off in good fashion" as Brogdon and two other athletes turned in "solid performances" at the range.

Brogdon led the group in the match, shooting a 588 - with 600 being a perfect score. In October 2010, Brogdon had set a record of 592 and was named the university's athlete of the week.

Also in March, in addition to the team winning the national championship, Brogdon and her team took home the air rifle title after firing a 2,353, topping West Virginia's team score of 2,350.
