Throwers advance to next round

Wallace ends career with school record

POSTED: May 1, 2012 4:30 p.m.

Two Dawson County High School Lady Tigers will advance to the state track tournament in Albany on Friday. Hayden Wilson and Kristy Martin both qualified in the discus event.

Wilson took seventh place with a throw of 98'8," while her teammate, Martin, finished just behind her with a toss of 94'5."

Whitney Wilson of Northeast Macon won the event with a throw of 128'11."

The girls' state meet will be held May 3-5 at Hugh Mills Stadium.

The Class AA discus event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday for Wilson and Martin.

"I am excited about this weekend, both girls have the potential to make some noise in state," said head coach Arron Haynes.

Dawson County senior Kimberly Wallace ended her high school career by breaking the school's long jump record at Saturday's State Sectionals at Lamar County High School.

Wallace had a jump of 16'3" to finish in ninth place, just one place out of qualifying for the state event. The top eight finishers advance to the state meet.

The Lady Tiger is a three sport athlete at Dawson County. She has played softball, basketball and track all four years.

"I am proud to have coached Kim for the past four years and am excited that she broke the school record in [her] final competition as a Tiger," Haynes said.

Winning the long jump was Jalisha Wright of Toombs County with a jump of 18'5.5."

This is the first year Georgia has implemented the sectionals.

Dawson County was matched up with regions 2, 3 and 4.

In the triple jump, Gracie Hovan just barely missed getting to the state tournament with a jump of 32'7.25." The jump was good enough for a 10th place spot.

Jasmine Roberts of Southeast Bulloch won the event with a leap of 36'9.25."

"Kim and Gracie are two of the toughest kids around to do what they did and battle through big injuries," Haynes said.
