Boys No. 4 seed in state tourney

Fall to East Jackson

POSTED: May 1, 2012 4:30 p.m.

After falling to East Jackson last week, the Dawson County High School varsity boys soccer team will go into the state playoffs as the No. 4 seed out of Region 8-AA.

The Tigers came away with a 5-0 win over East Jackson in preseason play, however the team fell 2-1 in Jefferson when it counted.

The Tigers will travel to Chatsworth to face North Murray at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

North Murray comes into the game with an impressive 12-2 record and is on an 8-game winning streak. The team has won 12 of its last 13 games.

The Mountaineers defeated Calhoun, 2-1, in the Region 7-AA championship game last week. North Murray avenged an early season loss to the Yellow Jackets, 3-1.

Tuesday's game with East Jackson (9-8-1) was frustrating to head coach Jed Lacey.

"This stung. We are a different team, personnel wise, with all the injuries and East Jackson has gotten better," Lacey said.

East Jackson scored two first half goals to take a 2-0 halftime lead into the dressing room.

The first goal came just over 7 minutes into the game on a throw in.

An Eagle forward hit a shot just inside the 6-yard mark. The ball hit both poles before going into the net.

The second score also came off of a throw in.

Tiger goalie Brooks Fulford mistimed his jump and the ball went through his hands and into the goal.

Dawson County got on the board in the second half off a goal by Josh Lund on a header from an assist by Stanton Rogers. It was Lund's ninth goal of the season.

The goal wasn't enough as Dawson County dropped the consolation game and ended up with a No. 4-seed going into the state tournament.

"We have the talent to make some noise in the playoffs, even after all our injuries, if we find our lunch pails and hard hats. We have three days of practice to get ready for North Murray and we are going back to work and to find out who wants to pay the price to win and that is the players that will be on the field in the first round of the playoffs," Lacey said.

The Tigers are currently 10-7 overall.
